Title: 4x12 Build
Post by: nattkua on February 11, 2010, 09:28:20 am
Hello everybody this is my first post on this board.

A friend of mine and I are going to be making a Sunn 4x12 replica and I want to document the build and I figured this would be the best place to do that.

My current guitar rig is a jcm 2000 into a Sunn 6X12 and a jcm 800 into an Avatar 4x12.

(I will get better pictures of my current rig tonight)

The Avatar sounds amazing but it looks like a Fender cab I want my back line to look great so I'm building this Sunn knock off to replace the Avatar cab and complete my back line (for now)

So starting next week we are going to start the build and I plan on posting as many pictures as I can.

It's great to see other's building cabs.  I enjoyed my Sentura project.  Keep posting pics as the project progresses.  I'm interested as I would like to build a 4 X 12 cab also.

Are you going for the 24" wide staggered 4x12 cabinet, like the Sceptre? That would be tres cool next to the 6x12  8-)

Had some trouble getting lumber but that issue is solved now the build will begin on Thursday.

I have the handles, corners and grill cloth.
Order some Tolex and the damn post office sent it back to Mojo so I have to call them tomorrow and have them send it back to my house.

This cab is going to be like the model t cab off of the Sunn webpage (www.sunnamps.com).

One of the guys my band shares a practice space with has a  Sceptre 4x12. I will try to get some pictures up soon.

What kind of joint did you use on the 4x12?

Just from observation, the joint look s ot be a butt joint with 3/4" plywood and then with a 1/2" facing strip around the perimeter of the cab front.

I'm not sure I didn't really do any of the wood work a friend of mine did I just tolexed it and put the speakers in.

Sorry another bad picture I keep forgetting my camera every time I got over to the practice space.

Any ways the top 4x12 is the one that my friend built me the bottom one is a Fender owned Sunn 4x12

Are there speakers in the new 4x12?  I can't really tell.  It doesn't look like it.  If so, are you going to be running the 800 in to both 4x12 and the 2000 in to the 6x12 or the 800 into one 4x12 and the 2000 into the 6x12?

The top 4x12 is the home made cab it's empty right now.
The Sunn 4x12 is loaded with celestion g12h

Right now I'm just running the 800 into the Sunn 4x12 and the 2000 into the 6x12 but I plan on running the 800 as a full stack once I get speakers for the top cab. This way when my band goes on tour this summer I can run the full rig or just two half stacks.
