EHX Steel Leather
« on: August 12, 2008, 10:07:10 am »
Hi,

just found this :

http://electroharmonix.ronsound.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=48&Itemid=47

I do like the EHX equipment, it's simple and effective in any way. Though my Sunn's do like to get this cranked sound, which is great, but weakens the bass attack (I drive the Sorado up to 100%). I think this toy should be very interesting for getting the attack back. Did someone try it out yet...? :?

Greetings

Oli

It's a pretty great pedal for guitar, for bass (which it says its intended for) I wasn't impressed.

It's not like an octaver, it doesn't add super fat lows. It's almost like an attack re-distributor, changing your more dominant frequencies to lower ones. It's not an extreme effect; in fact, the only extreme you can go to is something that sounds like 0% bass which isn't the purpose anyway. It would certainly thicken up a guitar, especially single notes on the low E string. But for bass I didn't think it was that useful.

I read the same in a bass-forum, one guy said it makes his bass sound like a toy. :-P Though I think the concept of the pedal is very interesting. Here is another one, I just read an info about it in a bass magazine:

http://www.ehx.com/products/knockout

As far as I know it is an reissure from an 70`s pedal and shold give U a better attack aswell.

I dunno, it says it will "make your Les Paul sound like a Strat and your Strat sound like a Tele." Doesn't sound like something I would want for my bass sound. I'm guessing you want to add some top end to your attack, but doing so without robbing from the bottom end is a tough nut to crack within one amp/speaker combo.

Hi,

yes, you're right. My "hope" is that it raises the "frequencies of the attack" without adding too much bass, like an eq with an narrow Q in the attack area. Though the tubes do have a rich compression I try to "support".

I wanted to try out the KNOCK OUT in an local store but this was the only ehx effect they already sold... I'll try it out and drop some lines here.

I had some spare time last night so I took the chance and used the EHX "Kock Out" with my Sorado. I was quite impressed, it does really put up some sort of attack. Though I got more  - let's say artificial headroom as I discribe it with as more  "volume for your ears" with less distortrion. On the other hands side it does effect the sound. I think this toy is very interesting when you are playing in a loud rock band context :-D - if you want the creamy, vintage style with a lot of crunchy mids - it's a no go :-P. But it's really worth to have a try out.

I have to say, I already have a sound that cuts through with great attack just with a dry 200s and an ibanez ergodyne.  I have to admit I like my dry sound so much I'm afraid to try anything in front!  long live Sunn!

Aah, an ergodyne, great bass - really fast! It's a an active one, isn't it? I use passive Fender Preci's and I think they like this extra kick from the knock out...I add just app. 10 from the effect though I will not kill the spice of the SUNN! :-D

it's an active one but I also use a passive precision that has plenty of growl, partly because I turn the amp up more for it than the ergodyne.  :-D
my only complaint with the ergodyne is the neck does move with humidity or temperature changes, at least more than my other guitars.  boss tu-2 tuner in between songs remedies that.
