2000S Project Begins
« on: December 21, 2010, 12:00:35 pm »
Hi, Guys,

To date, found a good, working and affordable 2000S head in moderate-to-good condition from a nearby friend. Had to celebrate the head by building two proper cabinets.

I'll post images and progress as I go

1. Got drawings and images from Conrad.

2. Verified 46-inch cabinet height (less casters) from Conrad and three very helpful members on the board.

3. Drew out materials list and lumber cutting sequence. I chose to eliminate the dado joints in favor of glue/countersink-screw assembly, which I can make more consistently accurate.

4. 12/20/10: Cut wood for two cabinets and grille frames.

TBC (to be continued)

Jeff,

Do you cut your own wood..or have it dones by somebody else?  If you cut your own, do you use a table saw or a circular saw with a straight edge?

Hi, Rob,

Home Depot. I found a careful cutter and tip him $20-30 for each job. The company doesn't charge for the cuts, only the wood.

Works out fine. I'm a model maker, and don't have room in my shop for big table equipment. A bench grinder, small router table, a 16-inch jig saw and drill press are about the extent of my table selection. I have a big belt/disk sander, dual buffer and few other tools on stands in the garage where I build my cars and race karts, but I don't do too much wood work there.

The important thing with someone else cutting for you is preparation. I draw everything out -- how to cut each board, part-for-part and cut-by-cut.

Warmest...

Nice, this is going to be good. I just mated my 2000s cab up with a pretty dead mint 2000s, and it's pretty incredible. I'm going to build another cab this summer, then we can have matching rigs!

Just as a note on cutting, I know you do a lot of this building Jeff, and what I found incredibly helpful was a Festool saw set up. Didn't need a table saw or hardly any room at all, and it does great straight lines. Kinda expensive, but cool and helpful to use.

HI, Again,

Been incredibly busy, but the Tolex, grille cloth and corners arrived from Conrad today. Lumber is already cut and waiting, and the 2000S cabinets project will resume shortly.

The head case has been completely refurbished, and the electrics/electronics have been gone over by my local guy, Vince Pennachi. The amplifier is in perfect order, with new tubes, caps, three-wire cord and whatever else he thought was needed. I don't ask and his work is excellent.

I'll post pics as work progresses.
