Sunn 2x15 (200s,1000s, etc) plans, schematics
« on: December 01, 2006, 09:52:19 am »
Looking for dimensions and plans along with wiring schematics so I can build my own version of a Sunn 2x15 "refridgerator" cabinet. Any help would be appreciated! Thanks! :-D

No actual dimensions, but here's a drawing: http://www.richbriere.com/images/wpe48765.gif

Thank you for the help so far. I found that on the Sunn Shack page and some dimesions for a 200s. I've never built a cabinet before but my dad is a woodworker and I am fairly proficient so I thought I'd give it a whirl. I guess I'll find some other resources on cabinet building. What's this I heard about some of the sunn 2x15 cabinets having the insides lined with fiberglass or something??!

Lining the inside of the cabinet with fiberglass helps to reduce reverberations inside the cabinet and makes for a more focused sound, but sometimes also a sound that isn't as rich.

Use the depth and width dimensions of the head you're going to match the cabinet up with ( ie: 200S or 2000S) and, and use the drawing you have, and design the cabinet with those dimensions. Should work out good. To get the original sound, a couple JBL D140F's are necessary though.

What are the difference between the JBL D140F's and the D130's. I know Weber makes a replacement for the D130's so I was considering using those if I can't find any old speakers.

Also, what kind of fiberglass are we talking about? Like, fiberglass insulation?

Thank you for all your help so far everybody!

Lining the inside of the cabinet with fiberglass helps to reduce reverberations inside the cabinet and makes for a more focused sound, but sometimes also a sound that isn't as rich.

The fiberglass (foam on later models) is used to damp unwanted resonant frequencies, and assist with limiting the porting to low end reinforcement. Without some sort of damping material the tone would likely become "rich" to the point of cacophony.

Use the depth and width dimensions of the head you're going to match the cabinet up with ( ie: 200S or 2000S) and, and use the drawing you have, and design the cabinet with those dimensions. Should work out good. To get the original sound, a couple JBL D140F's are necessary though.

The width part is correct, but both the 200S and 2000S cabinets are substantially greater in depth than their corresponding amplifiers.
The exterior dimensions are as follows;

200S - 42"H X 24"W X 15"D
2000S - 48"H X 30"W X 15"D

The porting is key. It's relatively easy to build a box the right size, a different thing altogether to get the porting correct.
They don't come along too often, but it's probably cheaper to buy an existing 200S cab than it would be to build one. The last one I bought was $375 with the original D140's still in it.

I paid $400 for my first one, only $100 for the second, but it has beat-up replacement drivers in it instead of D140s.

Whip Chop, the difference between the D130 and the D140 is that the D130 is a guitar speaker, the D140 a bass speaker. All other differences follow from that. The D130 has a lighter cone, with no ribbing, so it has a higher resonance frequency and a higher sentitivity. It doesn't have as much low end as the D140, but some people prefer it for bass use anyway.

As Isaac says; the D130 and D140 motors are the same, the only difference is the cone assembly. Same goes for the "K" series JBL's, marginally less sensitivity but same excellent AlNiCo motors and 4" voice coils, and a higher watt rating because of having a little more voice coil clearance and heftier spiders. I've also had good results with Altec 421's and EV SRO's in my Sunn cabs.
Weber has a great reputation for selling guitar speakers, but I think they only market stamped steel basket speakers which likely would be more prone to physical distortion under heavy use (loud, sustained bass guitar) than cast aluminum frames would.
Probably not an issue for most bass guitar applications.

Also, what kind of fiberglass are we talking about? Like, fiberglass insulation?

Like, yeah! Foam rubber is probably a better choice though, and definitely less irritating on your skin.

I have some pics of some of my 200S and 2000S cabs opened up, showing the porting. If you PM me an email address, I'll send them to you.

Thank you all so much so far with all your help. I think I found some measurements for correct porting of the speaker baffle and whatnot but yes, I'm sure it would be cheaper to just find an older one on ebay or something. Guess I'll just have to be patient.
Thanks again everyone.

Theres a very nice looking unloaded 200S cab. on e-bay right now, shipping is about $110.00
you might want to watch it but e-bay prices tend to go a little high!
