Title: Chassis treatment?
Post by: Greg_M on October 22, 2010, 08:54:56 am
The '67 200s that I got has a pretty pitted and rough chassis. I was thinking of sanding and painting it with a metal etching spray paint but wondered if anyone has had any luck polishing one with some rubbing compound and a buffer.

Another project !

Those are galvanized steel, and if you sand it, you will sand off the galvanizing, which will allow it to rust. Whatever you put on top of that must protect against rust. Also, if you sand it on the back, then any labelling will also sand away. You could get new labels made at a vinyl label shop but it is probably easier to try to avoid sanding it and try to shine it up.

It's odd that where the transformers were attached to the chassis it is shiny, but the rest is rough.

The area covered by the transformers isn't exposed so it doesn't oxidize at all...
To be honest I"d avoid the whole projet, it is what it is at this point and stripping the entire chassis out and re-doing it will be much more trouble than its worth.  Just my 2 cents.
