Very Early Sunn Smiley-Face Badge, Paisley Amp w/ Two Cabs
« on: March 19, 2015, 08:22:56 am »
I apologize that my first post here is in the classifieds

I have an amazing Sunn amp for sale. Is is the top-mount control with paisley wrap and the rare smiley-face badge on the head. There are no badges on the cabs; somebody must have taken them years ago or a previous owner lost them. One cab has a JBL and the other has an Eminence. The second JBL is included, but has a cone repair and I don't know if it works. I liked the sound of two different speakers so I never tried the JBL after I got it.

IMPORTANT UPDATE as noted in later post:

So I checked the JBL that was sitting out and it does work and sounds incredible so that's a bonus. Unfortunately, I found out that the other cab doesn't have a JBL; I always thought it was a JBL because it looks identical from the front and I didn't want to remove all those screws to check as they're screwed into wood and I didn't want to add extra wear. I believe it's another Eminence in there, but it has a smaller magnet than the other one. Regardless, you get three working speakers, one of which is a JBL D130.

According to my research, there were only 50-100 of the smiley-face badges ever ordered, which means there are even fewer of these amps out there.

I really love this amp as it sounds great and is a part of local music history. But I'm afraid to gig with it and I want money for something else. I'd rather have it be with someone else who will give it more love than I can.

Neither the head, nor the cabs have handles, but the cabs have casters. I had Chris Benson of Benson Amps go through it just to make sure nothing was going to explode on this beauty. He replaced some caps (can and electros) and one tube, but I have the originals. He also added a grounded plug.

Cab covers are included.

I'm asking $3000, but I'm open to offers. I might consider some partial trades, but definitely prefer cash as I'm trying to raise money for something specific. I understand this is the higher range of the current value of this amp, but, as you all know, Sunns have skyrocketed in value in the past ten years and this will only become more valuable over time.

Please post questions here so other people can see answers.

I'm not currently offering shipping and I'm located in Portland, Oregon. I can help drive it up to Seattle in early April, but I don't think the whole thing will fit in my car. If you can't get to Portland to pick it up, then I can see if it will fit in my car. Delivery is possible in other parts of Oregon and Washington as well.

I forgot to mention that this is the 60-watt version with 6550s.

What speaker cabinets? Are these the single 15 cabinets measuring 24x24x15? Is the JBL a D130 or D140?

They are 1x15 cabinets with JBL D130s. Well, one with a D130 and one with an Eminence. I'm going to try out the other JBL to see if it works. I'll take pictures inside the cabs while I'm in there. I'll measure the dimensions of the cabinets and post them here as well.

I'd love to know how to post pictures here. You can see a couple pictures on my instagram @jessemicah and on @bensonamps from 14 weeks ago.

You can click on "Attachments and other options" tab under the text box in the reply window, which will open up the "Attach" box below it. Just browse for the picture file you want and pop it in. Easy as pie.
Or, you can post a link from Photobucket or a similar web service, that's the most convenient in my opinion.

Post away, I'm sure we all would like to see some Sunn "porn"!

I'll definitely do that if for no other reason than to have pictures of this amp that I can look in a year at while kicking myself for selling it. It will have to wait until I get home, though.

Here are some photos. I'll take some inside the cabs and head as well. Let me know if you want pictures of anything specific.

I'll post pictures of the mystery speaker and the insides of the cabs later.

Congratulations!
How much did you get for it? This information would be helpful in establishing a market value for when a similar piece comes into the market in the future, as these "smiley face" rigs are rarely seen for sale.

EdBass it was cash+trade so that all depends on the value of the guitar I got in trade. Unfortunately, I'll probably end up keeping the guitar and selling my motorcycle instead so I might never know what I really got for the Sunn. I'd say I got around $2500, though, maybe a little more. I think valuing these amps is really tough because of how rarely they come up for sale; it really depends on how much someone wants it. I know I pulled out my credit card as soon as I saw it and had to buy it. It will be sorely missed.

Wow, thats a beauty and with two of the single 15's! :) Congrats on the sale. Hope it went to a new owner who appreciates it's rarity and keeps it in great condition.
