Hi, Again,
I came across a very nice 2000S head last year, and it's already been serviced and given the beauty treatment.

I've been threatening to construct a pair of 2000S cabinets to complement this thing, so I purchased a set of drawings and written instructions from Conrad ($35). The cut wooden parts have been in a corner of my model shop for quite awhile, and the urge finally hit. I got started just as soon as I completed the woodwork for my 115V knockoff.
I finally got to work on the two refrigerators, and here's where they are as of October 25th.

Both cabinets are fully constructed, sanded and their edges rounded.
A word of caution: Conrad's written instructions call for an 11/16-inch roundover bit for the edges. This is a huge curve - and incorrect. All my original Sunn components seem to have 1/4-inch edges), which were measured on several cabinets and heads with the Tolex removed during the recovering process, so please use a 1/4-inch roundover bit, not 11/16. I let Conrad know about this, and he will correct the error in the instructions. On the positive side, the instructions and drawings are first class, and well worth twice their price.
I'm painting the cabinets' interiors and backs now, and will post more images when the covering is applied and the hardware is installed. These cabs will each get a pair of Eminence Legend 15 speakers (CB158), which I already have. Tolex, grille cloth and all the other hardware and fasteners are also on hand and ready to install.
That's it: I'm officially out of room in my small basement studio!

The original 200S cabinets had the angle boards positioned in slots routed into the side panels. Did Conrad's plans indicate this? It doesn't look like you did this. Plywood in the 60's was thicker than what you can obtain now. Did Conrad's plans take this into account?

Conrad's plans show the routed channels. His drawings will give you a cabinet exactly like the originals.
I chose the glue and screw because it's easier for me to do.

I checked my drawing of the 2000S cabinet for the round over bit size. My drawing is correct indicating a 7/16" round over bit. :wink:

Hi, Again,
Conrad and I yakked about the roundover thing again, and he's checking further. We think that the correct size is more like 5/32, possibly 3/8 max.
Here's a shot of my two homebrew 2000S cabinets from Conrad's drawings, one finished and the other still uncovered.

The corners I got from Conrad were 5/16" as checked with a radius gauge.

Sorry. My error. Note should have read 5/16, not 5/32.
Remember that the Tolex somewhat softens the angle of the curve, and the corner will sit tighter if you trim the covering away from the "point" of the cabinet before installing each corner (lets the corner sit flatter to the wood).

What will be the method to replace tolex ? i,e, type of glue, application technique.
Where does one get tolex for a good price ?

Somewhere on the site is a build for four monitor cabinets that I did a few years ago. There are several images in that thread that show the Tolex application. I use U.S. Plywood "Weldwood" contact cement. Get the red can. The green stuff doesn't have the same grab.
You can press the Tolex pretty tight with the flat of your palm, but it goes down even better with a rolling pin you can steal from the kitchen. The whole trick to application is stretch. Pretend you were trying to cover your component with rubber instead of cloth. Pull the material tight in every direction before pressing it down, especially around the corners.
Tolex, grille cloth, corners and rubber feet are all available from Conrad. That's where I get those materials/parts for my gear.
Last time I ordered, grille cloth was $19.95 per yard and Tolex was $14.95 per yard. Both are 54 inches wide.
Corners are two-leg and three-leg, and were a little more than $1 each, maybe $1.10 or $1.20. Can't remember.
Conrad is a super guy to deal with, and he ships quickly.
Aaron has the later-style, leather Sunn handles with the angled end caps. He's somewhere on the board. I think he goes by akindle. He's also on eBay, but he sells to members on the board for a slightly lower price - another honest and reliable source.

thanks for that info heads up Will get my list together and ctc the Con.
I have 2 -215BHs just picked up. One is in great shape, other has seen some miles but is solid.
Hence the tolex replacement q's.

I built mine for something like $150 for materials, $250 for the speakers? It was a few years back, so I'm spacing a little bit on the exact pricing.
