Title: 2 of my past favorite amps
Post by: RobertS on April 25, 2012, 11:58:57 pm
First off Im new to the forum. Really glad I found it!  The DIY forum is awesome!!

Not sure why it worked out this way but 2 of the amps Ive owned in the past that I really liked were combinations of Sunn and Ampeg.

In the 70s I ran a Coliseum head through an SVT bottom and later in the 80s I ran an SVT head through a 200s bottom. Both rigs sounded great to me when I had them. I went through a few different speakers with the Coliseum before getting the SVT 810. I started with a pair of the Sunn front loaded 18s and really didnt like them. I then went to 2 Sunn folded horn 18s. They were really loud but I still wasnt crazy about the sound. The SVT bottom with Coliseum head was a great combo. Not sure why I didnt try a couple 200s bottoms at the time.

Never owned a Sunn in the 60s but I heard plenty of them and the 200s was a great sounding amp. I used an Traynor YBA3 with 810 bottom back then.

One of my favorite shows that I remember a lot of Sunn equipment at was Jimi Hendrix with the Soft Machine opening for them in 1968. Not sure if the Soft Machine and Noel Redding were using 2000s or 200s at the time but they had a lot of cabinets. Great stuff and some great memories for sure. I do seem to remember a Sunn PA.

Pic of me about 1975. With what I think (60 year old memory isnt what it used to be) is my Coliseum with the 2 front loaded 18s.
