identify this 215 bass cab!
« on: March 11, 2008, 08:51:07 pm »
Just picked up this cab unloaded. There's no badge, but the old-timer I got it from said it was a sunn, and from digging around here a bit it seems -- considering the horizontal port -- that it might be a 200s cab. The tolex is different than my other sunn cabs, and the black grill cloth is new to me as well -- although those could have been changed at some point. Or, I suppose, it could be a later 200s style cab? Anyway, if anyone has any ideas, I'd appreciate any feedback. Best, wiper.

Is it just me or does it look like it has an extra layer of tolex applied over top of another layer ?

It's a home made cab.

1) Front looks wrong and should have three screw corners.
2) Back has wrong number of screws.
3) Black paint on inside should be spray painted, not brushed.
4) Internal braces have screws, not stapled.

yeah, i may be inclined to agree that it's a home made cab... in picture three you can see the "feet" for the cab when it rests on it's side are these rounded metal nubs, which is unlike anything i've come across on other sunn cabs. it may have another layer of tolex underneath as well -- i'll check it out. thanks for the input!

Those little metal nubs look like the feet used on the original Sunn cabs Conrad made in the pre Tualatin days. My smilley face 2x15 does not have the front to back brace in the corners and the bracing around the back is nailed in. The angled portion of the ports fit into slots cut into the sides with a router. The grill cloth is on a frame that is held to the baffle board by screws on the inside of the cab just inside the bracing. Also the jack cup is offset from the center of the back panel.

dimensions are:

42" tall

18" deep (front to back)

24" across

I can take more photos if that might help... or if anyone knows where there might be photos of the aforementioned pre-tualatin cabs, that would be cool.

YOUR CAB LOOKS LIKE SOME ONE TRIED TO MAKE A COPY...now...the folded horn ,plywood pieces don't have those brackeys on them...some one proably didn't have a router to make the cut into the wood and fit them in...second....the biggest give away is the front...sunn used strips of wood around the front inside of the cab to give it a beefy - er look...yours is only the thinkness of the plywood itself...see.....it's not the real deal...i have done over...retolexed six sunn cabs...200s 2000s and i had them stripped down to bare wood...studied the insides and how the cab was made...hey ! it's only a glorified wooden box...but...when you bolt in some jbl's and plug in your jazz bass.....it's....well.....HEAVEN !    been inside them...smiles..Bob from mass

Real ones are 15" deep. If it's tight like a Sunn cab, it probably sounds OK with the right drivers. Here's a 200S opened up next to it's big brother for scale, and a closer shot of the porting.

I agree with all the other Sunn freaks here about it being a copy. It does look to be well built and sturdy though. Plug it in and play it! What do we have all this stuff for anyhow?
