Discuss! I am looking to get one or two of either of these cabs. I want to know the strengths and weaknesses of each. Thanks!

I'll just list out the major features of each one (to the best of my knowledge)

Sunn 215B:
Side ports (run vertically along side of cabinet)
Sunn Bass Tranducers
Made to go with Beta Bass Amp

Sunn 200s 215
Sold solely with the matching head
JBL D140s/K140s
Two circular tube ports located in the middle of the cab

Nope.

The 200S cabinet did not have the circular ports. I know there was one that did, but the 200S had the so-called "rear-loading folded horn" port.

The one with the circular ports is the Sorado. It was the "economy" version of the 200S; it had the same amp but the cab had cheaper porting and also came with square magnet, stamped frame (CTS I think) "Sunn Transducer" speakers rather than the cast frame AlNiCo D140F's.
In 1969 the Sorado was $670, $325 less than the 200S.

I have both 200S and 215S cabs (I think the 215S and 215B are pretty much the same), and I think they are pretty similar tonally, but the 200S is a little deeper; more "thump" on the bottom.

The 200S porting is also restrictive to a lot of frame/magnet structures, however forum member arskas built a beautiful 200S cab using Fane drivers and front mounted them.

He said that all he had to do was reshape the grill cloth frame a little to get it to fit.

Ah, my bad. I knew I'd seen one of the smaller cabs with dual tube ports, but wasn't entirely sure if it was the 200s or not. So the 200s is just a down-sized version of the 2000s (or rather, the 2000s is an upscaled version of the 200s)?

Hey Ed,

I think you have both the 200S and 2000S cabinets right? I used to have a 200S cabinet about 15 years ago, and recently got a 2000S cabinet at a great price ($300 with reconed D140F's, and it even has the old style grille cloth). I haven't played it yet since testing it when I bought it with the previous owner's Traynor.....but I was wondering if you could describe the difference in sound between those two cabs with the Sunn amp going through them?

$300 loaded with D140F's? IMO that's a righteous score!
I really haven't ever A/B'ed a D/K140 200S with a D/K140 2000S, Greg. I used to use a 200S rig pretty much all the time, with one or two cabs depending on the venue, or if I was feeling froggy and the stage was big enough a 2000S rig with one or two cabs. But honestly, I can't think of a time when I used the same head through each cab. I always use a 2000S head with a 2000S cab and the same for the 200S.
I can compare a 200S rig with a 2000S rig, but not a heads up cab to cab comparison.
I know this sounds silly, but the 2000S sounds... bigger. A lot louder with substantially more bottom end, I suspect that the bigger cab volume explains the bigger bottom and the bigger amp explains the louder part.

My big amps live in my shop, the only thing I keep in the main house is a B15N. It takes a real good reason for me to unpack a 2000S cab and schlep it to a gig.
I keep a 8,000+ watt PA, lights, and my "bass rig du jour" loaded in a E250 van in my garage, and currently I have 4 rows like the one pictured sitting in my shop. It's the only way I can have enough room to move around in there, but it isn't conducive to "quick changing" gear. It's like solving a Rubik's cube. A really, really heavy Rubik's cube.

Every few years I will drag everything out into the garage and make sure all is well sonically and electronically, the next time I'll do the A/B with a 200S head.

Thanks for your thoughts Ed!

Yah, I thought it was a great deal too. The D140F's are reconed locally and sound ok, but I have some old ones with good cones that I'll probably throw in there. I was keeping them (and extras) around for when I got around to building a 2000S cabinet clone, but since I have one now, I'll probably sell off some of the D series speakers I have that need recones. Anyone want some? :)

I plan to sell my rebuilt 1970 200S(Sonic 1) also once I get the 2000S all rebuilt. I'm going to use Solen film caps on this one in place of the electrolytics....there is tons of room even though the Solen caps are huge. Once it is done, I shouldn't have to open it up again for a loooong time. :)

Possible interest in the OK sounding D140s.  What are the ohms and ideas on how much?   :?  PM me.

Honestly I'm not sure yet. I got the cab about 3 weeks ago and haven't done a thing with it yet because I've been buried working on amps and looking for a regular job. I have at least 3 D140F's that need a recone, and then I have 2 good ones that will go into the cab. The ones in the cab that were reconed locally I am planning on evaluating, and I may keep them around for backups, or I may sell them. I will definitly sell the D140F's that need a recone however.
