WTB: Altec 421A basket
« on: August 28, 2011, 06:04:35 pm »
Looking for a trashed Altec 421A that can be reconed, (So I guess it can't be totally trashed)

I paid $25-40 for my JBL 140 baskets so I figure that would be about right for this basket.

I've got one and need one more.

Thanks

Hello Greg,
I may have one, I will try and check on Thursday.

I posted this on "Fixing up my 200S" quite a while back.

"Amp looks great and I know its been done for awhile so I hope you are enjoying it.  Could you please tell me what kind of paint you used on the chassis and did you paint the transformer?  Did you make the transformer feet, I know I'm not the only one that could use a few.  Do you have a parts list you could share?  I'm going to be fixing up my 1967 200S soon.  Any luck on finding pointer knobs yet?"

Glad you are back!

Greg, if you can't find one let me know and I'll check with my speaker tech. He usually has things like that lying around his shop.

Please do check, not getting anywhere around the Seattle area. I just renewed my CL ad. Maybe this week.
Thank you

Greg, have you ever had "Around the Sound" do a recone? They were referred to me by BassNW and you could very well be the guinea pig. Ha.

Yes!
I have been using him for decades. He does very nice work and his shop is like a candy store.
I think he said he used to do recones for Sunn, once upon a time. I will probably be using him again soon with this Altec. He did the other one I bought off Fleabay. I don't like the idea of altering a working speaker, but I do want them to be the same. The first one had been reconed by a total moron and did not even faintly resemble a 421A. It was hard to look at.
The only thing he could not match to the original design was the silver dome. The new tube thingy that they wrap the voice coil on sticks up a tiny bit further than they used to, so he had to go to a slightly larger diameter aluminum dome piece. I was disappointed in that it was not exactly identical, but oh well. I doubt anyone could tell by looking at it unless they had the original and the new one side by side.

Yes I do recommend him.

I think that my Magna recone is moving toward the front burner. I live in Anacortes so it isn't too bad. Thanks Greg.
