The guys are by far one of the loudest bands I've seen.

Plexi Guitar w/ 3 pickups into a wall of amps will definitely always achieve something WAY denser than any normal band.

Yeah Gentry Densley is definitely a mad scientist when it comes to gear. He usually plays two Model T's (first gen & second gen) and an Ampeg(?) amp I believe. His guitars all have two outputs, one output is from the regular guitar pickups and goes to his model T's via his Phase Wizard pedal, the other output comes from his custom made "bass like" pickup in the middle (which picks  up only his bottom four strings) and goes into the phase wizard -> the bass amp. Also, most of his guitars are a baritone scale length.

a great Crow Hymn video (he's using two first gens here)

But what about that Dan Armstrong of his, how does he do all that craziness with such an unmodifiable guitar? Also, they should go for a more mysterious approach for being that loud.

that's brillant, I'm thinking about modifying my baritone too...using my neck PU for bass head(this PU sounds totally like I'm playing some bass) and bridge for my 2 stereo guitar head...maybe later into winter, that could be a simple and cool project... :-D

Don't know much about the Armstrong, but I do know he modifies all his guitars somehow. Dude's a wizard. He has this pedal that a friend of his makes that I'm thinking of buying off him.

According to info here...
http://www.danarmstrong.org/mods.html

for the number of guitars made of the original line ('69-'70) it seems a high percentage of them have been modded in a lot of interesting ways so it's not impossible.

'a good investment?' it definitelee was for me. mine has 1 in 5 out plus tuner out.
Gentry told me Greg Anderson wants one just the same as mine.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure he has reissues then. From the live shot I saw of him using it his seems to be unmodified.
