Magna 2 x 15 cab. Questions
« on: May 01, 2002, 09:32:00 pm »
Hello all;

I just got a SUNN Magna 2x15 cabinet from a friend. I was wondering if it was possible to properly date when it was made. It looks like it's a late 60's model but i'm not sure.
Secondly, the original speakers were replaced
with 2 guitar 15-inch speakers. Are the JBL
D140-F speakers the proper relacements for this cab ?
Thanks in advance for your help.

I also have a Sunn 215s "Magna" 2x15 cab.  I was told mine was circa 1972.  I have 2 JBL K-140 speakers in it.  I was told that the K-140 is basically the D-140 but came out a few years after the D-140.   I think the D140 speakers were used in the 200s 2x15 cab in the 60's.  Either way, my cabinet is being powered by a modern Sunn 300T all tube bass head (now no longer being made as Fender dropped the product line).  I also have a 1967 Sunn 200s head that I use through this cabinet.  The 300T/215s cab set-up is the best bass head/cab set-up that I have ever experienced for larger venue gigs - thunderous earth quaking bass that hits you in the chest.  My band mates noticed the difference immediately.  For smaller rooms I use the 200s head.  The cabinet itself has the 2 handles on one side of the cab, 2 speakers are positioned a little left of center, and 2 baffles are positioned along the right side of the cabinet.  Hold onto that cab - put in some JBL's and you won't be disappointed!

thanks, Randy!

I guess it's more like an early 70's model
than a late 60's

It's mid '60s to mid '70s. If you tell us the serial number on the ID plate, or send a photo, we might be able to narrow it down. (Why does thec year matter?)

Hi -

If you have to remove the grille to mount the speakers, it's post 1969; if you have to remove the back to mount the speakers, it's 1969 or earlier.

As far as the 2X15 cabinets, I rather prefer the front-loaded design for sound.  But for appearance and mojo the rear-loaded cabs are beyond cool.  Either sounds fabulous, even with other than JBL's.  To this day, the old Sunn 2X15 cabs are the very best.

The serial # on the back is C004060
I guess it's later than 69 as the speakers
are front-loaded going by the prior info.
Not too important; just wanted to know what
year it was made....its in excellent shape
for its age
