Help identify this 215
« on: March 12, 2011, 06:24:48 pm »
I got this in a trade for an Acoustic cab. Not sure what model it is or year? It is currently loaded with a Sunn Guitar Transducer and a Jensen Special Design, both 15"s. I plan to remove and replace them 2 EV SRO 15"s. Also i am looking for the input jack plate if anyone knows of where i could get one.

That's what I'd say it is, the "economy" version of the 200S originally loaded with Sunn transducers.

So does that make my cab a "215S"?

Nope, that makes it a Sorado cab. The 215S has big angled horn ports on the side, and the drivers are off the center line.
The top cab in this photo kind of looks like two bottom ported cabs side by side, but it's actually a 215S on its side;

That cab design came as a 215S with Sunn Transducers, a 215M with Sunn Magnas, or a 215V with Cerwin Vega drivers. The 215S,M,V's replaced both the 200S cab (JBL D140F's) and the Sorado cab (Sunn Transducers), This is a 200S from the back;

Of course as with many things in those days, the 215 cab speaker choices weren't absolutely written in stone.
I have what would be I guess a 215J?  :? It's the 215S,M,V cab that came factory loaded with D140F's; which by that time were no longer officially offered by Sunn.
The cab was originally part of an endorsement deal, and the JBL's were specified in the agreement.

I would like to score another cab just like the one i have, loaded or unloaded. If anyone has one let me know. I am open to trades etc.

Also any recommendations for fixing up the one i have? Would painting the cab be a bad thing in your opinions? i am not 100% on board with painting the tolex but i have seen some REALLY bad paint jobs!

Your cab looks really good and with that early grill cloth in clean shape I think you have a real gem there. You will be amazed how well the cabs can be restored to look near new with out anything drastic like painting. If you want more ideas on restoring the tolex just let me know but here is a great restore that Jeff did on a 4x15 http://sunn.ampage.org/sdp/index.php/topic,5235.0.html Also get a vinyl cover made for it and it will keep it in amazing condition for years and if you ever decide to sell it it will bring you some good cash and make someone very happy to pair up with their late 60's Sorado.
Here are shots of my older Sorado set up.

Thank you so much for directing me to that link. I am definitely going to try that technique! I will post pics as soon as get it done.

I guess that the input doesn't have a metal plate surrounding it but instead a round plastic piece. I need one of those and the rubber feet. Any idea where i would find those items? Also my corners are nasty...i will try your method but those puppies are bad! HA!

Also the cab does not have casters on it. Is there any harm in installing casters or does that depreciate the value of it. I am not looking to sell it but would rather have something worthwhile to keep and use for years mind you.

I agree that you should keep the cab as original as possible.  What I've done with my cabs (200S  and  215S) is replaced the grill cloth frame and all,  kept the original "Old Style"  Sunn Grill frame/cloth stored safely.  That way I don't risk damage to it in case I ever want to re-sell it as original.

For the tolex (outside):  Don't "paint" it if you don't need to.  If you do want to re-condition it somehow I tried something I read in an old thread about this.   I washed thoroughly with "Murphy's Oil" TWICE using a tooth brush to get into all the texture crevices of the tolex.  Then I  did the whole cab over with  KIWIK  liquid shoe polish.  Those cabs look practically brand new.
