Greetings from the Sunn Shack

Greetings Sultans of Sunn,

Who the heck is MISTER Briere??  You guys talking about my father? :^>)  I plead guilty to not keeping up with the SUNN Shack. Changes in my life over the past few years have left me with little time or energy to do so. I promise, I'll try to be better. BUT, the fact still remains that I can't reply to all of the Email........... but THIS GREAT place exists to answer any and all questions.

This site is wondrous beyond compare and information flows freely between people who genuinely care about one of the greatest MI manufacturers that ever existed. :^>)

Bass-ically Yours,
Rich Briere

OK Justin.......I'll begin digging out the files that remain again tonight. What would you like to know about your cab?

As an aside, an evil person abscounded with most of my information/catalogs several years ago. Can you say divorce?  I've received quite a few inquiries since I popped back in here and just so everyone is "in the loop" so to speak, that's a major reason why I don't have much to offer these days. :^>)

Thank you for your time,  Mr. -um- Rich.   I just have not found much info at all about it is my problem; leading me to think it is either rare or insignficant.  It is a 612s - two rows of three 12" speakers diagonally opposed.  All of the music stores around here ( Philadelphia ) have never heard of it - including the Music Museum, where it was purchased.  It also does not appear in any of their reference materials.  I would like to know where I might find out more.  Can I trace the serial # to check its history ?  What is the age ?  What is it worth ?  How rare ?  Who played them ?  Sorry for coming off as snotty,  but I was frustrated, and you seem to be one of the few people who might offer me help.  Thanks again for your time and effort, anything you can tell me would be greatly appreciated.  Justin.

OK Buddy, here ya go. There was a cabinet that was in production from at least 1970 until 1975 as it appears in the catalogs for both of those years. The 1975 catalog shows it with a model number of 612SP.....Description....V-type front loading Horn; Six 12" Sunn128G Speakers.....Impedence: 6 ohms; Power capacity 300Watts RMS..Size 42" high, 24" wide and 15" deep. The weight is 105 pounds. I may have a 1975 price for you if I look long enough.

The LIST PRICE of this behemoth in 1970 INCLUDED the ever popular Sunn 1200S head (yes folks-I actually own one of these heads) which put out a massive 150 watts. At THAT time (1970) the cabinet could be ordered with either Vega speakers or JBL D123F speakers. Sunn dropped their affiliation with JBL shortly after that.

What's it worth?  Whatever anyone will pay for it. I know, that sounds rather vague but I've found 2000S cabinets WITH JBL speakers ranging in price from $150 to $600. You're correct in assuming that there aren't many of them around. Most of the really big Sunn cabinets ended up getting trashed from being moved or were chopped up in the late 70's and early 80's when men became panty wastes and chopped them down to make them easier to transport. If I had to put a value on it I'd need to know what it had for speakers. Off the top of my head, the cabinet is probably in the $200-$250 range unless it has JBL's that are in good condition. If I had it, I'd keep it.

Related--SUNN had 6x10 cabinets which used the same box and they recessed the speakers back a bit more. Also available: 3x12 cabinets that you could use side by side. Each of those were 6 ohms as well, however.

Hope this helps.

I feel bad keeping it because I rarely play that loud any more.  But I suppose I'll hang on to it for the memories... or who knows , maybe I'll come across another Marshall that needs a beat down.  You are a good egg.  Be well.

If it's possible, a higher resolution Solarus schematic would be great.  The one that's up right now is pretty hard to read - a lot of the component values are too blurry to make out.
