Title: 215BH restore
Post by: sturoc on February 05, 2012, 01:03:57 pm
Picked up these cabs and one was real rough since I have the time and the shop, decided to do a restoration project on it. This cab is actually very solid and appears to have not ever gotten wet. Joints are good save for one corner that has small amount of joint spearation.
Suggestions on tightening that back up ?

Any tips etc are gladly welcome.
I will update in segments.

Yes that is a second 215BH underneath this one. However it is in very good condition with only a driver recone or replacement needed .

Glue, screws and pipe clamps for joint separations.  Wood filler and or fiberglass for chips. Liquid Nails contact cement for new tolex.

I see most people recommend wood filler. Does anyone use Bondo?  Ive used it before on cabinets and it works great.

How is the restoration going. I've been hording these thing for the past year. I now have 6. What speakers will you be using? There's simply nothing on earth that sounds like them.

I used bondo on a fender tweed deluxe back panel. Someone had hacked out the vent holes to accommodate 6L6GC's so I built it up and filed dressed it with a flat bastard, a pippin file and sandpaper. To me it's much easier to work with than wood filler which doesn't sand easily. The wood filler and/or fiberglass is probably a better choice for areas that are likely to be stressed such as the corner of the cab pictured above imho. At least in this case a grinder could be used for roughing out.

Sorry gang I was away for the month of August
I had the Magnas reconed but the guy did a not so good job on them. I installed them in my good cab and they buzzed .
So back they go for another recone  on warranty of course.
I wound up using a high quality Bondo which worked great for all the chips dents delaminated areas sanded all down and after a few tough ups will be ready for the new tolex. I also recessed the input jack plate at it's old position cause if you were to slide the cab, on it's back, in and out of a van, station wagon etc  the plate/jacks would catch on carpet, wood etc

I may consider selling at least one of these cabs. but i want to get the restore project finished first.

Ahhh yes the old sci fi horror drone tones ! the 215BH is the cab to do it for sure .

I see a white stripe just under the model # logo plate.
My cabs do not have that, What's that all about ?
