200S Output Transformer
« on: September 01, 2008, 05:34:53 pm »
I've got an old 200S that I'm trying to get back in working order, but have run into a few problems. First, the OT is bad and I can't really seem to find much info regarding the transformer. From what I can gather it is a Sunn part (3-60T) so probably no longer in production. I seem to have run across a few clones on the net, but the costs are a little too pricey. I ran across another post on here where someone had found a Hammond 1650p with the same output ratings as the 3-60T. Does anyone know anything about whether the Hammond is compatible with the Sunn? And if so, will it have an affect on the sound? I guess I could always have the original rewound, but it's my understanding that rewinding isn't necessarily always a cheap option either. So I was hoping to find a comparable tranny and possibly save myself some $$ if possible.

Another question is that the amp is missing a few caps and resistors. While most of the components are still readily available, there are two caps that I can't seem to find. A 750 PF 1KV and a .0075 uF @ 600v. Any suggestions as to where I could maybe find these  or a possible substitute?

I think your best bet is Triode Electronics, their A431S is a tried and true replacement, and for $119 I don't think you can go wrong. I don't think the Hammond is any less.

Excellent! I can deal with dishing out $119. Ok, so dilemma #1 is solved, thanks Ed. Now if anybody's got any info on those caps, I'll be able to have this amp back up and running in no time.

I'm having Gary of TSR (out in Maine) rewind my 2000s transformers.  His prices are good and pretty comparable to the one you  were thinking of going with.  At least if its rewound its more original than a clone.  Good luck.

Antique Electronics Supply (www.tubesandmore.com) in AZ used to carry the .0075uf in Orange Drop 6PS series, but no longer. All they have close are .0068uf and .0082uf in the 6PS series, and a .0068uf in the metallized polyester tubular caps they sell. They don't have anything close to the 750pf. You may try Angela Instruments, or other vendors that carry NOS parts. For a cap, as long as it is not paper or electrolytic, it should be ok.

Hi there, you could also parallel a .0050 and a .0025 to get the right value. It might look a little hokey, but it would be the right value.Good luck,Mel.

The 750 pF sounds like a mica capacitor - they are getting more difficult to find but Digikey has them at $3.78 ea.

I re-capped my 200s years ago - maybe its time to go through some of the components again before they become un-obtainium.

Brain fade.........Digikey and Mouser don't stock or only have SMT package. Allied has stock on the 1000pF 1kV for $2 axial.

Ya, I've checked out both of those sites already but to no avail. I've actually still got the original 750 pf cap, but I think someone had been using the amp for parts and snipped one of the leads in half, so I think there is enough there that I can salvage it. As for the .0075 mica cap, I may just have to go the parallel route since I would like to keep the circuitry as close to the original as I can. Just one question, I know that when you parallel caps the capacitance gets added together, but does the voltage as well? For example for a 600v rating would they both need to be 600v or would I need to use like a 400v with a 200v cap?

Hi there, both caps should have the same voltage rating, good luck Mel.

Try parts-pxpress.com.  I have their catalog and they show several types of transformers.  They have Push-Pull Ultra Linear OT's from 10w to 280w.  They also have a big selection of othr electronics and stuff.  They even have Sovtek and Electro-Harmonix vacuum tubes at a decent price.

hi gang..i got a transformer from triode and it was a drop in replacment..it was about two years ago...you can't go wrong for the price....like ed posted...it's the place to go for both transformers ...lets put it this way...our amps were made 40 years ago...triode is a real safety net for those who need a transformer......smiles  Bob
