JBL 15" D140 /etc ..Bass Speakers
« on: May 05, 2001, 10:12:00 am »
I am aware that the original 200S and 2000S cabinets had JBL D140 15" Bass speakers ,and were awsome. I have seen for sale, various JBLs such as E140s and K140s. Are these just newer versions of that speaker? Are they as good or better ? I have an old BullFrog  1-15 Bass cabinet that I am thinking of replacing the speaker with a JBL D140 if I can find a good one. But wondered if these other  140 models  are a good alternative? Want to use it with a 200S powerhead.

The K and E series are newer versions of the D series and either would be a good alternative. It would be most important to find a D140 if you were restoring an older Sunn cabinet to original specs, otherwise, any 140 model should do fine. If you buy a used JBL speaker, make sure it has a JBL cone in it. I own a number of JBL 15's and have learned the hard way that what I thought was a great deal turned out to be a recone with non JBL parts. Be aware of non JBL recones, their sound and power handling capabilities are far inferior. I have a K140 that I've used for 20 years, and it still sounds great.
