Sunn 4000s
« on: July 17, 2011, 07:56:42 pm »
Alright, so today I drove down to Oregon and dropped off my beloved Sunn 2000s of in the hands of Conrad to give it a good going over (caps, removing death cap, 3 prong cord). While I was there, I discussed my cabinet build with him, and he showed me a picture of a 2000s cab he'd recently built for a client. During the course of this discussion he asked me if I'd ever heard of a 4000s. Puzzled, I said no, and thought to myself "Is it some experimental higher powered 2000s they tested out way back when?" as I know that there are some anomalies and one-ofs that have surfaced before. Anyways, he went on to explain that the 4000s was a cabinet, essentially two 2000s cabs mated together!  :-o Yes, you heard right, a 4x15 comprised of essentially two 2000s cabs. Not the Magna V-baffle 4x15. He said only a few were made as experiments, and didn't know what had ever happened to the ones that were made. Anyone else ever heard or seen one of these monstrosities? These things must be like the Bigfoot of Sunns.

How would you move it? Seriously, a 5'x4'x15", 250 lb. cab would be like moving an upright piano or a B3; you would need a truck and help!  :-D
I'm glad they never made it into production, because I'd have to have one...

Haha, yah if anyone would it would be you or Isaac! :)

DMN, glad you made it down to Conrad's. He's a great guy huh? I had forgotten about those cabinets...he mentioned them to me awhile back too. Your 2000S will be happy after Conrad gets done with it I am sure.

Not I! I don't even have any of the 30" wide cabinets. It's all 24" wide for me.

Heck, I have my hands full moving a regular 2000S cab around (and I only have one!). My back hurts just THINKING about a "double" cab.

Yup there is always the Acoustic 408 - it was only 142 pounds (64 Kg)

I'd have to agree with Issac; I've owned a 2000s cab, gigged with it twice, what a pain. The 200s/24" wide cabs are the perfect size. In the '69-'71 "Hiwatt" era, The Who's John Entwistle used two Hiwatt 4x15" cabs(with a 4x12" on top of each)easily seen in the Woodstock and Isle Of Wight films, or in this video:

http://www.wolfgangsvault.com/the-who/video/young-man-blues_1293014538.html

Even though Roger Daltry is a short guy, they still look huge(he's standing in front of one most of the time). Marshall made a few 4x15" cabs, slant and straight, in the '70s(AC/DC used to used them)and then this currently:

Scroll down to the bottom of this page to see a Trace Elliot 4x15"

While it's cool idea, it's a bit logistically impractical. Unless you have a bunch of helper monkeys on hand to move it.

Oh man, that would be a monster. My 200S cab had rubber feet on the side, presumably so they could be stacked horizontally which seems plausible with that sized cabinet taking into account the lack of PA support for bassists at the time. That's the only reason I can think of why it doesn't have handles on both sides.

You're probably a smart man Isaac.  :-D I sold my 200S but still have my little homemade 1x15. I can flip that on it's side and it will fit the 2000S, and I have the 2000S cabinet to fit the head too. Thats what I'm down to now. I have one more JBL D140F that needs a recone to sell and have an extra D140F and D130F for future projects and that is probably where I'll stay. I have the SVT for bigger gigs if I need it, and it and the 2000S both need rebuilds and I don't have time to keep up with either...haha.

I did a bar gig a couple months or so ago with a two cab 2000S rig, and as glorious as it sounded it will be a while before I do it again. Not only is it a SOB to move, it takes up a whole bunch of real estate on stage once you get it there.
Also, for most of the last set I was dreading the 3 AM load out through the crowd of drunks rather than rockin' the rig. Those of us that have been there know the drill... excuse me; pardon me; watch out!; excuse me; get out of my way and get a room; etc.

As I said, it will probably be a while before I decide to gig that rig again, my 200S and 215S cabs do a fine job in a much more user friendly package.

Pappalardi and Redding had roadies...

Exactly. Those really big rigs wre intended for professional touring groups, with roadies, hand trucks and trailers with lift gates.

I'd have to build myself one too.......

Anyways, yes, it was awesome meeting Conrad, he was great. And I cannot wait to get my amp back and put it through its paces.

...or the foolishly tone obsessed.....such as myself. I plan on using the dual cab rig as much as possible, just for the shear gut-wrenching awesomeness. I'll worry about my back later.

I’m jealous, that’s about as cool as it gets Dylan! I was in Portland a couple of years ago and really wanted to meet Conrad, but I was on a tight schedule and didn’t want to impose on him so I just passed through silently. Maybe next time…

Ah yes, I remember feeling the same way. Regretfully, for me (and probably a few other crusty old veteran players here) it is “later”.  :-D

Yeah, it's later for me, too.

Seriously, I'm getting tired of working. Retirement is starting to look better and better.
