I just bought 10, brand new, Rogan Plastics knobs, made for vintage, 60's, 70's & 80's Music Man and Sunn amps.
They were produced by the original manufacturer and look identical to the old, vintage knobs: 0-10, witch hat, reflectors, with a screw.
The seller, Chris (a very nice guy) bought a batch of 500 (October 2016) and I told him that I would help him get the word out.

These look to be accurate reproductions of the 0-10 numbered knobs that Sunn used on their tube amps from the late 60's through early 70's. As I recall the originals were also made by Rogan. A forum member had Rogan make a run of these knobs a few years ago and I bought several .....look stock on my 2000S!
The Music Man knobs are very similar, but the typeface is different.....the numbers all have a more "square-shoulder" look. Lots of people might not notice the difference (especially if you replace all the knobs on your Music Man amp), but side-by-side it's pretty obvious. See the attached photo of a Music Man knob.

As a follow-up, I purchase 10 knobs from the seller on Reverb.com for my stash of Sunn restoration parts. These are very high quality and virtually indistinguishable from the originals. You might squirrel some away for a future restoration while they are available! No affiliation, just my 2 cents!
-
Ryan, will you sell me 1 of the Rogan knobs? I only need 1......
-
I need to purchase 1 knob if you've got any left?
-
Sorry guys. I have very few of the Rogan Sunn knobs left and need to keep them for future restoration. Track eBay and Reverb as possible sources.

Here is an option........Reverb has a listing by "The Bonfire Vanities" in Portland, Oregon. These appear to be the correct knob for early Sunn amps (correct shape, numbering, set screw and numeral typeface)....except that the aluminum insert has been painted red. In the past, I have restored Sunn knobs with corroded inserts by polishing the aluminum insert with a Dremel tool, small buffing wheel and some polishing compound.
I imagine that the chipped red paint on the listed knobs could be buffed off. Just a thought. These knobs are a bit spendy, but might be a good solution. No affiliation ....just trying to help.

The seller's shop name is "The Bonfires Vintage".
These have the rounded font.

Another listing from this same seller has red centered knobs with the more squared off font.

And yet another listing. These are silver centers with the squared off font.

Also...no affiliation...

Those silver insert squared off font knobs look like the real deal, but unless those inserts are platinum that price is pretty steep. I'm a proponent of "whatever the market will bear", but when member "george" commissioned a run of them in 2008, they were FAR more reasonable;

At $19 per piece, makes you wonder if it isn't worth doing the legwork and commissioning another run...

I sent an email to the manufacturer, when I get the details I'll post here and maybe we can get a collaborative order together.
-
Watson....thanks for the name correction!
EdBass......yes, if there are enough people to chip in, perhaps we can order a run of these. Rogan also makes the earlier style knobs with the pointer arrow in lieu of the 0-10 numbering....I have these on my 4-knob 100S.

I would be all in.

I'd be in too. Keep us up to date Ed!

EdBass,
I'm in for and order too. 10 knobs at least....maybe a few more. Thanks for exploring this with Rogan.

There is a 500 piece minimum order, but I don't have a price quote yet. They are looking for the order that george placed in 2008, if they can't find it they will need me to send them one of the originals for them to give an accurate quote. That's a buuunch of knobs, the high dollar ones popping now almost have to be from that 500 produced in '08 I would think.
-
EdBass,
Thanks for doing the research on this. Yeah, 500 knobs is a bunch! If we have enough interest, I would be happy to send you one of my reproduction knobs.....I recall that I bought 10 reproduction knobs about 10 years ago ......likely from the batch that George ordered. I've used up half of these knobs on restoration projects. These are the correct style knobs....witch-hat style, silver aluminum insert, numbered 0 - 10, with the correct "rounded shoulder" typeface (not the square-shouldered style for Music Man amps).
See how much Rogan will charge for this 500 knob order. I would be interested in buying a bunch.....depends on the cost.
Thanks!

I've still got a few of those repro knobs from George also, still in the blister packs. I agree, they are absolutely dead on.
Hopefully I'll hear something soon, the total cost is going to be the question. I don't remember what the unit cost was for the George knobs in '08, but I remember thinking it was very reasonable.
-
I'm in for probably a fair amount too, but it depends on the per-unit cost of course. I'll continue to wait and see what you're able to come up with. Thanks Ed for your efforts!

I'm sending off one of my original knobs, won't get a chance to do it until next week though. Apparently they can't find the order from George in 2008 to quote me from.
I'll keep everyone in the loop!

Any recent development on the possibility of a knob run?
-
I haven't made any headway yet. Two reasons, first I've been traveling pretty extensively, the second reason is more relevant.
When I spoke with Rogan, they told me that someone else, someone who I would absolutely defer to should he decide to move forward, was inquiring about having a run of the same knobs made. I'm thinking that with their 500 unit minimum, 1000 of them would be a serious glut of them in a somewhat limited market.
I haven't heard back from this other party as of yet, however I will send the "George" knob, sitting in front of me as I type this, to Rogan next week and at least get the firm quote and report back.
-
Any news on the Rogan knob front?
-
I'm backkkk! I found the invoice from Rogan for the 500 unit build I did in 2008 - wow that was long ago. I also found about 30 knobs from that build so if you want any let me know they sure won't be $19 though.
-
Please sign me up for 7 knobs. PM me please.
-
Hi George,
Will you be able to process requests for the knobs soon?
Many thanks,
Steve

Hi George,
I am still wondering about the Rogan knobs you said were available. I've heard nothing since early October when you mentioned you would be back "next week".
If you can't or aren't going to follow through, please at least let me know that things have changed.
Many thanks,
Steve
