No possible way that I can think of. It's a mono mixer, not stereo.
Q & A / Add Panning to Alpha 4?
« Last post by Audreyrose on January 23, 2022, 09:00:24 pm »
Hello, I recently purchased a Sunn Alpha 4 mixer. Only problem is it's a four channel MONO mixer without any panning. Anyone have any solutions to adding to this? I was hoping to use it as a stereo rig for live use(modular going into 1+2, vocals going into 3, and 4 for misc things like guitar or bass or contact mics)
Q & A / Re: 71 Solarus external bias question
« Last post by Kevin Sparka on January 14, 2022, 07:52:18 am »
Hello all, finally got some time to test a few things out on this amp yesterday and have some findings as well as a question.

Plate voltage with the 5AR4 is 500 volts. I have looked at a lot of schematics out there for the KT88/6550 and while there are differences one consistent I keep seeing is the -55v on the bias pot setting. That being said, at -55 with this plate voltage it puts the tubes (EHX 6550) at over 85mA!

To get a bias around 70% I set the pot at -65v which gives me about 55mA

I also have a 5R4WY (the big potato masher) I put in as a test. With that, the plate voltage drops to 477 which coincidentally gave me just under 55mA when I set the bias to the -55v seen on all the schematics. This leads me to believe the plate voltage was intended to be in that ballpark with the lower wall voltage back then.

So, my question is?..has anyone seen issues in a Sunn amp running the 5R4WY rectifier (or have a reason why it is a terrible idea)? I am using it for guitar only and typically like a bit of sag so I am OK with that.

Thanks all,

To all that may have missed it, here is a link to Rich Briere's website that includes info from John Teagle's 1998 Vintage Guitar Magazine article on the early days of Sunn amplifiers:

Q & A / Re: Recommendations for a 6550 Tubes for a Sunn Model T
« Last post by Kevin Sparka on January 07, 2022, 05:01:30 pm »
Hey Orion,

Greg & Stephen are indeed cranking their Model T's but also running pedals into them...rats, green ringer, boost etc. In fact, the Earthquaker Life pedal is a combo of exactly that chain.

I am actually waiting on some JJ 6550's for my Solarus and it was the description on the Eurotubes site that pushed me in that direction (link below...scroll down to the 6550 part). I should have them this weekend and will update how they sound compared to the EHX I have in there now.

I can't think of a power tube that is/was intentionally designed to break up early. Along the lines of Isaac's post, generally the goal in the tube game is to extract maximum power while keeping THD as low as possible.
I think that's particularly true in the realm of the big power tubes like the 6550 and KT88.

They'll all distort if you turn up enough, and from what little I know about the artists you mentioned I'm guessing they just crank 'em up.

That said some tubes break up earlier than others, and I second the idea of contacting Eurotubes. If anybody can help you in your quest it would be them.
