Title: Sunn Amp Dating?
Post by: Parallelcircuit on September 13, 2007, 12:44:35 am
I recently picked up my first Sunn amp; a very nice sounding Alpha 112. I was wondering if there was a way to get an exact date on something like that?

It says Made in USA; Tualatin Oregon. (about a 30 min. drive from where I'm typing this!!)
Serial # A 773xx

If anyone can help me out, I'd be very thankful!

If you take the chassis out, you might find a sticker as to when the amp was tested after manufacturing.

It might be a metaphysical discussion... is this "exact" enough... when is an amp actually born... etc.  :-D

I've never seen "xx" in serial numbers. It would have been nice if Sunn used some sort of serial dating scheme - but who knew that anyone would actually care.

Hmm, I was more curious than anything else. I did tear the thing open and didn't see anything with a date though.

I guess for now I'll have to be happy with the fact that the amp just sounds really good!  :-D

On a side note, it looks like the board has room for the reverb controls; would it be possible to turn my Alpha 112 into an Alpha 112R? Would it just be a matter of finding an old reverb tank and installing some switches/knobs?

I was cleaning the chassis off when I bought my Solarus, and noticed writing under the dust.

It was the date!  I'd imagine seeing as the Solarus and the Alpha came from the same factory, similar methods would be implemented.  Good luck!
