Help with identification? 1966
« on: December 08, 2014, 12:53:45 pm »
Hi,
The owner of a neighboring business passed away and this Sunn amp was unearthed in his shop. I'm trying to help them ID the model so they can sell for a fair price. All I can determine is that it appears to be a 1966 model. There are no other markings or labels on this. Ideas?

I'd say that's a later 1966 first generation 40 watt amp, post "smiley face " logo. Hard to tell for sure, but in the one pic that has the transformer showing it appears to be the smaller tranny.
Look for completed auctions on eBay for one to determine it's current market value, but it's rare. To the right Sunn collector a desirable piece, but it's a pretty limited market.

If the matched cabinet happens to be hanging out in the shop with it, that adds to its collect-ability substantially.
You will need lots of exposure to let that "right" collector find it, IMO the best idea would be to put it on eBay with lots of detailed pics (serial numbers really aren't helpful in identifying old Sunns), give it a nice long run duration and you should get enough attention to sell it for what it is worth; whatever that number may be!

I saw that after I answered your post. That's a 60 watt head, which is generally considered to be more desirable, and more importantly it come with the proper 2 X JBL D140F cab. In fact that complete rig is probably the top of the split chassis Sunn heap.

It will be interesting to see if it sells for the $2K, I personally think that is a very tempting price for that complete rig.
Of course, I'm a total Sunn Geek though...

I doubt I'll win the battle but it is being discussed under my roof now.  I don't think I have the horsepower to win the battle though and "A happy wife is a...".

I'm pretty sure the amp shown in this thread is a 60W. The 60W chassis is 9 inches square. The 40W chassis is 14 X 5 inches.
