Grounding a sunn 2000S with a 3 prong and death cap help
« on: February 05, 2016, 02:03:54 pm »
This site is awesome FYI. Is there is a proper way to connect a 3 prong cord to the sunn 2000s and bypass the death cap? Or do I just connect the leads the same and connect the green ground wire to the tranny lug. Also do I leave the polarity switch alone or just snip everything out on that switch. A schematic could help but i couldnt find one for the 2000s

Here is a link to the Sunn 2000S schematic.

http://el34world.com/charts/Schematics/files/sunn/Sunn_Schematics.htm

There is also a great amp forum on that page too.

The proper way to wire up a 3 wire power cord is that the fuse should come first, then the switch, then the transformer wire. These should be on the black wire in the US anyway....it would be different in Europe. The other side (white wire in US) should go straight to the other side of the transformer. However, if you do that, then the light on the power switch will not work anymore on the Sunn. The death cap and the ground switch should be completely disconnected. To keep the light working, you have to wire it up close to what Sunn did, but eliminate the death cap and ground switch still. It isn't technically proper, but it will work and is still safe. The main thing is to eliminate the death cap and ground switch from the connections.

The green wire should be grounded on its own lug an inch and a half from where the power cord comes into the chassis and leave a little slack on it so that if the cord got pulled out of the chassis, the green wire would be the last one that stayed connected. It should be connected to the chassis on one of those little lugs >> https://www.tubesandmore.com/products/S-H112 and secured with a KEPS nut so it will lock down to the chassis. You should never secure it to a transformer bolt as sometimes transformers can get changed and someone might forget to reattach that ground connection.

Yep, what Greg said. Also.......you should install some plastic, u-shaped insulation on the chassis openings where the transformer wires pass through. This will prevent possible shorts. Sunn amps originally had this.
