Sunn Solarus Year???
« on: November 10, 2002, 12:38:40 pm »
Hey folks.  I have a Sunn Solarus but I can't determine what year it is...69, 70, 71?  All of the info I've found on tubes don't seem to match mine.  I don't seem to see a GZ34 tube or even a spot for it.  I've got 2 Gt-6550's, 1X 12ax7, 1X 12au7, and 1X 7199 (pretty sure it's a 7199).  The serial plate on the inside says "Sunn Musical Equipment 027106".  any info would be great.

I found the test date on the chasis.  12-27-72.  I didn't know they made them in 72.  I still struggle to find an answer to my GZ34 question though.

Sunn Solarus Year???

Factory SS rectifier instead of GZ34.  I vaguely recall my guitar player's 190L has some sort of a plate/cover in the chassis where a rectifier socket would go (right "behind" the PT).

Good luck!

I just bought a '69 Solarus.  It still had the original Mullard power and rectifier tubes.  Replacing all of these did wonders for the sound.  In particular, replacing the rectifier tube w/ a Weber "copper cap" (a SS rectifier that plugs into the GZ34 socket) brought the amp to life and the bottom end is now great.  So, your SS rectifier is probably a good thing.
