Sunn Solo 1 help!
« on: December 22, 2016, 08:34:41 am »
I've recently come into possession of a pair of Sunn Solo 1 amps, one non-functional, and the other semi-functional but in tastefully modified at some point. I'd like to fix them both back to stock, but I'm having 2 issues. The first, I cannot for the life of me find a schematic for the Solo 1, which is making diagnosing and repairing this thing a pain with the mods in it.

The other, which I'm hoping the schematic could help me fix, is the non functional amp has a blown power transformer. The thing is a burnt lump of glorious uselessness... And has no useful identifying markings on it. So my only option for getting a replacement power transformer is to send it to a shop that will tear it down a build a replacement (which will cost a pretty penny).

Any help anyone could give on this would be highly appreciated!

I have a couple of observations which might prove useful. Or not.

I've never heard of a Sunn Solo 1. Or a Sunn Solo, for that matter. I have heard of a Sunn Solos, and a Solos II. Maybe you're looking for the wrong thing? A quick search didn't bring up a Solos schematic, but it did bring up a Solos II schematic. Might be close enough to be useful.

Sorry, yes, they are Solos, but I was trying to differentiate them from the solos 2, which are a different amp altogether (all solid state, vs the Solos 1 being a tube pre-amp).

I've tried searching on every variation of the word solo(s) to find anything, but I've had no luck. Even the original sales brochures I've found online barely make any reference of them.

Kossandr, see if the power transformer has the numbers 28-2350 and 682036 stamped into the end bell.

The power transformers on the two amps have similar but not exactly the same numbers. The fried one has the following markings:
WTC 1461
Oct 1970
28-2351

The working amplifier has the following markings on its transformer:
Western transformers, inc.
1417
28-2350

28-2350 is the Sunn part number. I purchased six transformers with that part number from Cascade Surplus in Portland back in the 70's.

Western Transformer was Sunn's transformer vendor located in Portland near the Ross Island Bridge. Most of their transformers have end bells painted with gold paint.

Good to know. You don't perchance have any left that you'd be willing to let go of do you? :-)

I've done searches on those part numbers and already contacted Western transformer to no avail. Sounds like my only chance on a replacement is getting mercury magnetics to tear down my fried one and rebuild a new one. Time to save my pennies for a while. Thanks for the help, I do appreciate it!
