Concert lead and slave together...
« on: January 27, 2003, 11:29:12 am »
I've looked back at some informative threads about wiring these together into multiple cabinets, but haven't come across advice on wiring them into a single cabinet (Sorry, this may be a silly question)...

I've been plugging in to the lead, then out the "preamp amp out" jack on the back of the lead to "line in" on the front of the slave, then out the "line out" on the front of the slave to the "power amp in" jack on the back of the lead.  Then using the lead's speaker output to my 810E cabinet.

Is this right?  Seems like there is an improvement in tone, but not much of an increase in volume, which I was expecting but not necessarily aiming for.

Is there any difference electronically if I connect the cabinet to the slave's speaker output on back and eliminate the connection between the salve's line out and the power amp in jack on the lead?

Thanks...
Jason

Your connections seem more complicated than necessary.  You seem to be wrapping back to the concert head... via the poweramp in jack when it is not necessary.

I would plug the concert preamp out into the slave... then the slave and concert lead speaker outputs would drive their own speaker cabinets.  I really don't understand plugging back into the concert lead poweramp input jack... that connection is already made internally, and using the preamp output doesn't disconnect that connection.

Doubling the wattage... as in using a slave poweramp, will not result in doubling the sound output.  That has been mentioned here in numerous posts.  Doubling the wattage will only give a 3db increase.  You will need a 10 db increase... a 10 times increase in wattage to double the sound level.

Hope this helps...

so, by just connecting the preamp out and the slave's line in, there is an increase in the lead's power output?   i guess i reasoned that you would need to connect back to the lead to get the benefit of the slave's power if using just the lead's speaker output.  sort of a "completing the circuit" logic, which judging from what you've said, is incorrect.

out of curiousity, what is the power amp in jack used for if not this?

thanks for your response...

THE SLAVE AMP = PARALLEL - you need 2 cabs or equivalent

Your Lead head has a preamp section and a power section.

The preamp out is post tone control and exits before the power amp section from there it goes out to the slave input, which is just a voltage divider....the sensitivity knob is really just a "balance"  control beween the slave power section and the Lead power section......so you can get the overall volume even between the two power sections - think about it if one was 150 watts and the other was 1000 watts you would divide the signal different than if both power sections were 150 ...this is because your power amp sections are alway on full blast - volume control is back at the preamp

from the slave-out you go back to power amp in on the lead and its power section

so its one preamp - which controls tone and overall volume and two power sections balanced by the sensitivity knob.

therefore you really need two cabinets or or one cabinet with two speakers each with its own input jack.....hope this helps
I enjoy old Sunn stuff, tube and solid state, I have a Concert Bass, Concert slave, 1200s (4X6550, dual rectifier) Concert PA, Studio PA, and an old Acoustic 360 2X15 cab but with Sunn Speakers)

Rock On!!

"from the slave-out you go back to power amp in on the lead and its power section "

This is the part that is unnecessary... this connection is already made if only the preamp out jack on the concert head is used.

If the power amp in jack on the head is used, then this internal connection would be broken.  The power amp in jack allows you to use a different preamp other than the builtin preamp in the concert head... or in conjunction with the preamp out jack, to patch in an effects unit between the concert's preamp and poweramp stages.

Power amps drive speakers... both power amps... the one in the concert head and the slave require their own speaker load.

old topic... but i have yet another belated question... thanks for the replies by the way.

just out of curiousity i changed the wiring around a bit, this time plugging my ric into the lead, connecting the lead's speaker output to the slave's input, and running the slave's speaker output to my fridge cab.  the ensuing volume nearly tore my house down.  i guess my question is - is this bad for either amp?  is this a common setup?  i didn't really like it so much, but i can see where some would.

thanks again, i realize that these "newbie" questions can get old...

I wouldn't consider this to be a common setup.  It probably wouldn't hurt the slave as long as you keep the volume on the slave low... the speaker output signal level is much higher than the preamp output signal.  That's why it sounds like you are getting much more of a volume boost.

Personally, I would use the preamp output jack from the concert into the slave and turn the slave volume to max - meaning it will receive the same level as the internal concert power amp.

If this doesn't sound as loud through your fridge cab... then chances are that speaker/cab combination is less efficient than whatever cab the concert speaker out is plugged into.  If that is the case, I would switch the cabs... use the fridge with the concert speaker out.
