Solarus with power variations
« on: June 10, 2003, 11:39:44 am »
To all you techies out there:
I have a '70s Solarus that jumps back and forth between full power and low power after it warms up.  Not much change is tone, just about 75% as loud as a moment ago.  It has a mismatched pair of 6550s.  Would this have anything to do with it?  Do I need to replace the power supply caps? Any ideas?

Tim

No... mismatched power tubes won't do this... and it doesn't sound like caps either.  Some intermittent connection.  Check cables, wiggle pots (might be a dirty one)... could be dirty tube sockets... etc.

Well, I've checked connections, cleaned pots, cleaned tube sockets, tapped on every resistor and wire in the thing and found no faults.

Any other ideas?

It kind of fades (1 sec) to about half volume.  This fading leads me to belive that it is NOT a mechanical problem but an electronic one.  Would super sonic oscillation cause the amp to heat up and run at less performance?

Ok, after a great deal of troubleshooting and searching I found a resistor that wasn't properly soldered.  Thanks for the advice!
