I am a designer of a new line of amplifiers that is being released in a few weeks.
Our bass amp called the PRO BASS is an Ultra Linear design. At the last minute or say a day, we researched the internet to find if an Ultra Linear design amp had any acceptability issues. UL is about non-existant and especially so regarding bass amps. No one needs a new product to have acceptability problems.
Our amplifier was designed months ago & we never seen a Sunn bass amp. Our research had found a Sunn 2000S as UL PP designed today. So, with interest we looked closer. Here is our findings between the Sunn 2000S design and our 'clean sheet' design. Both amps share the following-
Four KT88s (6550s).
Push-pull UL final amp.
Folded horn speaker cabinet.
Our amp had certain design goals that must be met.
Low cost- difficult in this era.
Latest features- includes piezo compatible, dual hot channel switching, dual rect comp circuit, infinite variable foot petal master volume.
This amp had to be under 90lbs, yet loud with only 225 watts RMS available. The new heavy duty 50 watt plate KT88s performs this without any stress. The speaker system was the clue. We needed high efficiency and low bass extension- enter the folded horn design dating back 75 years!
Our 'hat is off' the to Sundholm brothers. Although our company is highly skilled, obviously so was Sunn. Interesting how great items have been lost throughout the years.
