preamp tubes for model-t

here's a question for y'all:

I burned out a preamp tube in my second gen Model-T (mid-select switch version)....turns out the dead tube was a Sovtek 12ax7lps, placed in the first position (right above where the inputs are located)...

now, this amp's got 12ax7's in all three spots, but I'd like to put in a ECC83....does it matter which position I place this tube in?? I'm guessing it makes a difference in the sound where each tube is placed, but is it bad for the amp play around w/preamp tubes???

At first test, I've found that the ECC83 sounds nice in the third position (closest to the power tubes). Is this the "best" or right spot for this tube??

what kind/brands of preamp tubes are people using in the model-t?

thanx

It sounds as if you've found the best positions for the 12AX7s you have.
Generally nos U.S. made (RCA, GE, Sylvania, etc.) or European made (Mullard, Amperex, Telefunken, etc.) are not only the best sounding preamp tubes, but last for many years!
