2-15 Bottom Technical Questions
« on: February 01, 2005, 08:59:33 am »
1. Does anyone know the low end freg. response of the 215 cab? Im guessing around 40hz.

2. Is there much of a difference in the 215 with the port in the middle as opposed to the cab with the ports on the side with the 15s to the left of center?

3. Does the single 15 have the same low end response as the 2-15. I think that coupling the ports the way they are on the dual 15 center port would be better as far as low end response.

Im going to start building a few of these soon. They will do double duty as as bass guitar speakers and PA subs. Im not sure which design to use. My goal is to ended up with 4- 15s total. Im not sure if I should make 4 singles for easy carrying or 2 dual 15 cabs. If I go with the dual 15 Im also not sure which of the 2 designs to use.

I would appreciate any help I can get here.

Thanks!

Ive only owned the 2-15 center ported cabinet. I at one time played an SVT head through one and it sounded great with D140s in it.

In the early 70s I owned a Colliseum Bass amp and played that through  2 of the 18 folded horn cabinets.  I soon traded the 2 18s in for an SVT 810 bottom and used the Colliseum Bass amp with that.

I can't comment on the difference between the two 2x15 styles and their sound, but I have experience with the 2x15 w/port in the middle, and also a custom 1x15 I had made which is very similar to the Sunn 1x15, but just slightly bigger. The 1x15 sounds just as good as the 2x15, but of course it is more portable, and not as loud. It still does the bottom end response quite well. I just used the new cabinet last night at a blues jam gig with a 200S head and it was GREAT for all the basses that were used in it including an upright. I don't currently have a 2x15, but I remember the sound of the one I had well and think they are great. I think either way is a good approach, and I would base your decision on portability and how often you think you'll need the power of the 2x15.

Thanks for the reply and the info about the 1-15. I think thats what Ill do.

If I build 4 I can go as light as a single 15 or use all 4 if I ever need it.

What did you load your 1-15 with? JBL??

I ended up having a 1x15 made which is ported like the Sunn 2x15, but the port comes out the bottom of the cabinet. It is the same width as a 200S head, and if you filp it on its side, it is the same width as a 2000S head, so I can use it for either head depending on the power I need. Its covered in black tolex with the red oxblood grillecloth. It has the recessed black Marshall style handles on the back and sides for lifting. I used a JBL E140 in it because I would need the higher power rating that it has. (200w). I like the sound of the D140's better, but this works well. You could make a D140 or K140 into a quasi E140 by reconing it with the kit from the E140, but I wouldn't bother. Just find an E140 around.  The D140's are worth bucks and sound great, so IMHO they should be left stock. I could send you a pic of the cabinet in a week or so once I find my digital camera. I'd need your email addy also.

The Sunn 2-15 cabinets have double the volume (cubic feet) of the single 15 cabinets. You do get a little low end boost when you run two 15s close together. I use two 115 Sunn cabinets stacked together. It's the best of both worlds...portable but delivering nice bass low end. I've put an EVM 15L in the top cabinet and an EVM 15B in the lower cabinet...again, the best of both worlds. I also found that when I tuned the cabinets a little lower, I got a better, tighter, deeper low end. I did the same with my Sunn 2-15 cabinets with the same improvement in tone.
