2 15 Cabinet Restoration Questions
« on: January 18, 2005, 08:02:56 pm »
I just bought an empty 2 15 cab to go w/ my ('69?) Sorado head.  It is rough cosmetic shape but solid.  I've had the head since '79 & always wanted the cabinet to go with it.  Issues:  I read through the last 1 1/2 years of postings for sources.  I know about Wendel fabrics for new grill cloth but also need a source for new Tolex.  Except for the back the Tolex is completely gone so I also need to know where to put the seam(s).  The 2 handels are still there but have been moved to 1 on each side.  The 6 feet are also missing.  Anyone know where I can get similar feet?  Also, if anyone would give me the measurements to locate the handels & feet it would be a big help.  The last issue is the back.  As you look at it, there is  1 jack in a round recess off center to the right.  On the left someone cut a big square hole in the back.  I don't have a photo of the back so I don't know what's supposed to be there.  I am leaning toward using Weber speaker since they are very similar to the old JBL's but haven't seen any postings about them.  Anyway, thanks in advance for helping me restore this cabinet.

Mosrt of these parts are available, though they won't be a perfect match...in terms of collectors.
You can order Sunn Tolex from Fender! The grille cloth you might be able to find. It's similar to Fender's "blackface" cloth, but it IS differant. Acoustone uesd to handle it.
You are taking on quite a labor-intensive project. I'verestored a dozen Sunn cabinets, and even built a few from scratch, and it's quite a job!
Where to begin...?
You can fill the cut-out area on the back, as stock Sunn 2-15 cabinets had 2 recessed cups for 1/4" female jacks. It had either one handle centered on one side, or 2 handles at the top and bottom of the same side...depending on the year of manufacture. If you look inside you should see the holes. When I re-habed my 2-15s, I put one handle in the center and one handle at the top of the same side, and used T nuts. I did these this way because 1) I had covers that had cut-outs for the center handle and 2) if 2 people are available to carry these, then one can grab the top/side handle and the other can grab the wheels. I have some parts and know of sourses for almost all of the hardware needed to restore these.
Anyway, as you can see, this can get very involved.
e-mail me, or post here, if you want other help or advice.

My 2-15 (center port) cabinet is still missing the Sunn logo.  I used to see them for sale but I guess Fender has stopped making them.  I could also use a knob for my matching Sorado head.  If anyone has either for sale please let me know.  Thanks to Tom L. for the help locating the other missing hardware.  Also, since everyone seems to ask about speakers, I am using a pair of EV Force 15's (I found them cheap on ebay & have always had good luck with EV's).  I am running an 4 Ohm total load which shouldn't be a problem since I will only use 1 cabinet (moving one of these beasts in more than enough for me).  It sounds great (all the way to full volume).  Now I have to finish making it look as good as it sounds.
