Over on the Plexi Palace forums(www.vintageamps.com)there was a discussion/poll as to everyone's favorite preamp tube and their sonic characteristics; however, owing to the vast variety of amps(and the way each one sounds differently), no hard conclusions were met(i.e. a JJ in a Fender will come across differently than in a Marshall, etc.). I recently snagged a '69 Sorado with OG tubes(RCA 6650's, unmarked 6an8, and a Mullard(!)pre, all are good, and after the obligatory cap replacement and a solid state rectifier plug, it's rocking' hard. But after reading the P.P. posts, it was pointed out that Mullard 12ax7's are a bit mid-rangy, and I wonder if I should put it in my '66 Vox AC30, where it would be more "at home". So, whatta youse guys like otherwise? What brand, new or old, would best serve the classic Sunn 60/120 watt platform; please describe the tonal differences, and any gain aspects, thanks.

I also have the same RCA 6550's and Mullard tubes in my 2000s. I did some testing with a 60's Amperex Bugle Boy thinking I might get the extra gain and presence that I was looking for. Both sounded great but to my ears the swap did not chance in any perceivable way so I'm staying with the original Mullard. If it's true "Mullard 12ax7's are a bit mid-rangy" I would guess that might be a good thing in the Sunn amps since they dont have a dedicated mid knob. I may try out a Telefunken and Tung-Sol I have already have in another amp next time. Curious as well if others here are done any experiments with various tubes in their Sunns and have any personal preference.
