Thank you Sir for your response.. I am really just looking at the thing right now.. though.. I do know that the caps have been bled off.. all I am doing right now is just trying to make sure what is that I am looking at.. then as I learn each section.. draw it to paper.. so then I have a schematic of what really is in there.. Yes.. it will take me some time.. and going slowly.. I will learn it.. by the way.. were you in the Navy? Hence the screen name?  I was too.. Corpsman..

Plus I am keeping a written file on all responses.. to a Word document.. so when I have a answer to something.. I am also mapping the amp in words for future reference..

No, though I worked for the NAVAIR in a civilian capacity for quite a while.  The screen name comes from a Firesign Theater bit.

Just wanted you to be safe.  BTW, both versions had the Contour (midrange, to the rest of us) control.

Aye on being safe.. no.. I knew that the caps were dangerous.. before even touching anything I checked them caps.. it did help a little too that it had not be plugged up for 7 years.. I know that the caps can store voltage, of course it is not the voltage that gets ya.. it is the amperage.

This project is going to result in a schematic of the Spectrum I amp and I am sure that there are a few even on this site that would like to have a schematic of this amp.. !!!! Right now .. as old as the amp is.. it prob would not hurt to re-solder all the points in the amp. I have begun to make the drawings of amp already.. I may be wasting my time.. but I had thought about re-capping the amp.. I am not sure yet if it needs it. I am getting ready to buy some other equipment too.. a signal generator, tube tester, oscillioscope.. there is no one in a 60 mile radius of where I live that works on tube amps. Hence another reason to learn this amp..

Spectrum 1 and Sonic I-40 similar

Doc,

I believe this link will be helpful:

https://schematicheavencom.secure.powweb.com/newamps/sunn_sonic_i40.pd

The Spectrum 1 and the Sonic I-40 are similar.  The Spectrum has a contour pot whereas the Sonic I-40 does not.  But the base amp is the same 40 watter with the 7199 driver.

Hope this helps.

Chuck

PS Can't stress the high voltage danger enough.  If you have it on and are mearsuring voltages, keep one hand behind your back.  Basic rule when messing under the chassis.
All vintages Sunn tube amps should be making sweet noise somewhere!

OOPs, left the "f" off of "pdf" link.  First mistake I made for the new year!
