Altecs ever offered in SUNN?
« on: June 28, 2001, 12:25:00 pm »
Somone had a post elsewhere stating that Altec 421-8H (15-inch bass speakers) were "offered as an upgrade to the JBLs during the Hendrix-SUNN era." Does anyone know if this is, in fact, TRUE? Anyone HAVE such a cabinet as proof?
Thanks.

Having them in your cabinet doesn't mean that Sunn put them there.

I don't. But I've seen EVs in Sunn cabinets, and I'm sure they were never a factory option.

A question for anyone who has an opinion. Would the 421-8H have been an upgrade over the D140?

Nope, I have no cabinet.  I do remember reading in Sunn catalogs that Altec speakers could be installed instead of JBLs... however I doubt that they would have billed the Altecs as upgrades to the JBLs.

Is this a possible mixup?  I mean... I know Harvey... dang can't think of his last name at the moment... sorry...

designed the D1xx series of speakers for JBL and then went to work for Acoustic Control Corporation where he was involved with the design of the Acoustic 260.  Somehow in this arrangement, Acoustic Control was prohibited from using the JBL speakers Harvey designed in their amps.

This would not have extended to the other manufacturers of the time - Sunn as well as others like Kustom offered both Altec and JBL speakers as options.

However, I remember that The JBL option was always more expensive than the Altecs.

I've owned several old 200S and 2000S cabs over the years, and I've never seen one (that I was sure was original) with anything other than D140's in them. I've bought them with all kinds of wacky drivers installed, but they were replacements.
Could the 421's be a custom factory install for a particular artist(s)? I'm sure that then as now, if you were "somebody", just about any manufacturer would install whatever you wanted in their cabs.
I bet those old dia-cones would sound pretty cool in a 200S rig though.

I have a SUNN product guide copyright 1970 that shows 12'' EV-SROs
as an option in Coliseum Lead, Solos, and Solarus models. Nothing
about Altec. They offer Vega as stock and EV-SRO or JBL D123F
as options.

Looks as though I was wrong about EVs, then.
