« on: November 06, 2000, 12:20:00 pm »

hi all.  i have a beautiful old sunn cabinet.  it has SIX twelve speakers in it, in a "v" formation.  does anyone know what kind of speakers are in this cab?  i hear old sunns had either jbl or eminence speakers.  i need to know the impedance and such so i can replace one of the speakers.  any help would be greatly appreciated!

Swant;
My 1974 Sunn Catalog lists the 612S as a 6 ohm cabinet. If the speakers were 8 ohms each and you wired 3 pairs in series and then wire the 3 pairs together in parallel you get 5.33 ohms...so they called it 6 ohms. So I would guess your speakers are 8 ohm. Put an ohm meter across the terminals of one of the good speakers (un-wired from the others) and you should read something a bit less than 8 ohms (6-7 ohms). This would confirm that the speakers are 8 ohm. If your speakers are all original, I would suggest that you have the damaged one re-coned. It's usually a bit less expensive that buying a new one and preserves the authenticity of your cabinet...meaning it will be worth more money when the rest of the vintage amp guys catch on to what us Sunn guys already know....Sunn rules!!!
Good luck!
