200s for guitar?
« on: April 15, 2006, 02:17:10 pm »
Has anyone here played a guitar through a 200s?  I've played through various other bass amps so I'm assuming it's possible but I'm wondering about the tone.

I'm trying to get a big rig together with as many SUNN components as possible.  Right now the only SUNN I have is a red/black concert lead and a couple of non SUNN 4x12 cabs.

But hopefully there is more SUNN on the horizon.

Well, I had a 200s/sorado I was using for guitar. I am assuming if you have a lot of dist pedals in front of it, yes, it alright. It is not SUPER LOUD though remember these are 60watt amps.. I traded my 200s/sorado for a coliseum lead, to play my guitar through. However, I play very cleanmost of the time, and just wanted a loud amp.... so volume outputt was an issue for me, but keep in mind I run a beta lead head with the occasional vox in there too... soo umm I hope this helped!

Sure.  I have two 200Ss and a Sorado.  They're great for guitar IMO, they'll do AC/DC crunch all day long.

By contrast, I also have a Fender Bandmaster.  The Bandmaster is brighter and more scooped in the mids, and also stays clean longer; the Sunns crunch up pretty quick.

The only real drawback to Sunns are the cost of tubes; even modern production 6550s are at least twice the price of decent EL34s/6L6s, and 6AN8As aren't ever going to get cheaper.

I play both guitar and bass through my 2 200s rigs with a 2x15 under each and I daisy chain the amp's inputs. add fuzz pedal (or not) and stand back. 60w is not as quiet as you may think when you've got two of 'em!
