sunn enforcer head
« on: January 07, 2006, 09:16:17 am »
Hello everyone! I'm brand new to this awesome forum. I'm also a first-time Sunn owner. I just bought an Enforcer head and it blows my Marshall JCM 900 away. I am having trouble getting a good clean tone through it however. Any other Enforcer owners out there that can give some advice or some setting examples? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hello:
Early Enforcers had a distortion problem, later ones were clean and loud.
So first question: Does your Enforcer have the piggyback relay mod (shown in the manual docs on this site)? Early units had to squish the signal down to get through the FET channel switching. Later units used a relay which caused a audible click through the speakers but had full voltage and current between the pre and power sections.
It's the ear not the gear.

Start by going to the main page for this site (www.dangpow.com/~sunn/) and looking at the information on Enforcers. There's one under User/Service Manuals.

I don't think my head has had this mod.

Did you ever figure out if you have the relay mod? I may have a spare circuit board for that-- if you want, I'll look. (No promises)

Although there are several ways I could tell by listening to the amp, I can't describe it well enough for you to check it out that way. The easiest way to tell is to pull the chassis out of the cabinet. The circuit board is only a couple of inches on a side and sits on a stand-off post above a tube socket. It has a relay and a few other components on it, and some flying leads that run to several places on the main circuit board. The relay is about as big around as a pencil and an inch long. If you don't see anything like this, you don't have the relay mod.

Thanks! I'll check it out. I was just down in your neck of the woods yesterday. I go down there every two weeks.
