is there a simple way to test the impedance rating of my cabinet? i have a multi meter, but know little about using it. maybe there is a link to a page somewhere that explains it? picutres?

Use your meter.

Measure the DC resiatance (ohms) of the cabinet.

That actual impedance will be higher, due to reactance, but don't worry about that. Just assume that the cabinet impedance is the next higher standard impedance: if the DC resistance is 6.3 ohms, call the cabinet 8 ohms.
