That's a beta preamp.
Believe it or not, it's just the rack-mount non-amplifier version of a beta series amp. Not sure about whether its the lead or bass version, but I'm not sure it quite matters.
As for sound, hell yeah it would help if you like distortion
Another thing about the Beta series is that they are pretty much the undisbuted KINGS for putting pedals in front of. They work perfectly, as you can see from Buzzo's setup.
As for worth, it depends on what you want to pay. I got lucky and only paid $250 for my beta lead COMBO, but there have been ones that have gone for $350 or $400. So subtract what you think the cabinet, speakers, and power section are worth, and there you.
If you really want it, I'd say don't worry about money. I've only ever seen one other of these on eBay.
P.S. - Joe, I looked at the other pics on the auction, I think I remember seeing a duplicate set of loop jacks on the back! Might be able to have some fun with that....
