Concert bass amp-piggy back [with matching cab.] question
« on: February 22, 2007, 06:50:43 pm »
Hi everyone. Greetings from Kimberley B.C. Can.!
I have a question concerning 2 items recently purchased - Namely a Sunn piggyback concert bass amp with what has to be a matching 2 speaker cab. The covering of both is a 'crinkle' black vinyl and they have the following appearence - Amp: 2 inputs - brite & normal. Controls - vol., bass, mid, treble, distort [with alternating 'bird's head' and round knobs] silver & blk. finish with 'Sunn' and [underneath]'Concert Bass' logo; The back of amp has - red polarity switch, 1 & [2 covered] speaker outputs, pre and power amp  jacks, 2 'distort' L-R foot switch jacks, a covered reverb footswitch jack?,
a ac outlet and what resembles 5 'ovaloid' plastic covers in a horizontal row.
The cab. measures 24"wide x 40"tall x 15" deep with 4 castors, side grip handle which is kinda redundant 'cause the thing weighs at least 40 kilos! - Silverish grill cloth with probably 40 screws holding back on-[which makes an 'autopsy' daunting!] All in all... except for a couple of small tears in grill cloth, I'd say the condition is about 8.5.
Now to the question - Anybody familiar with this ensemble?- Info? - possible value? specs. -[power] or links to above? I must brag now....For the grand total of 500$ Can., I scooped this plus a mint 70's mapleglow 4001 Rickenbacker bass w/O.H.S.C.!!!

You got your Rick Bass for free!!!!
You have the first verson Concert Bass head (150 watts?) and what sounds like a 200S cabinet,When you pull the grill off if there is a horrzontal port in the middle it is a 200S cab. if the speakers have silver cones they should be J.B.L's in wich case the cab alone would be worth $500,concert bass heads usually go on e-bay for $200 - $300

:-D Hey Fatliz... Thanx for replying and thanx for the heads-up on info. When you said "...pull the grill cover off" - did you mean that part comes off [like most Hi-Fi speaker grills] or will I have to go thru the daunting task of removing the back for access[all 38 philips screws]??!
By the way, I found a alternative site for grill coverings that looks good:http://www.vibroworld.com

I have the same cabinet with JBLs (center port) and the front grill cover does not come off, best that I can tell.  I have always gone through the back, as the screws to remove the speakers come out from the back side of the speakers.  I also have a same size cabinet, but different model (port on side, speakers offset), and the grill comes right off with velcro on the corners and the speakers load from the front.
Sunn 2000S bass head with (2) 2x15 cabs with JBL speakers.  Fender Jazz bass Special is primary bass with a 61 Hofner Cavern Bass as backup.  Also have an Ampeg B-15n flip top amp as well.

On my 200S cab. the grill does come off,it should be held on with velcro, you might need a screwdriver to pry it out.I added 2 short strips of material on the sides so you can pull it without having to pry it.
The back does have to be removed to get to the speakers!!

I have two 200S cabinets. On one, the grill comes off. On the other, it does not. Doesn't matter much, because, as meltdown said, the drivers are mounted from the inside.

The 200S cabinet has the so-called "folded horn" port, horizontally across the middle of the cabinet. The 215S has a flared port, also called horn loaded, vertically along the right side of the cabinet. The 215M is the same cabinet, loaded with Sunn Magna drivers. Both the 215S and 215M should be labeled as such on the jackplate. The 200S is not labeled.

There was also a 2x15 cabinet with two circular ports. I don't remember which amp these went with. Sorado? Sonaro?
