may seem like a lazy question..
« on: June 07, 2007, 04:31:59 am »
in the fender era 215b, the reissue cab w/ metal grating.  what run of the eminence speakers are in there?  kappa?  big ben?  etc.  i'm expecting the typical "rip your cab apart and look" responses, but hope to avoid them seeing as my cab isn't here with me and i'd like to know from someone who could let me know.  thanks ahead of times dudes.

based on the voice coil diameter and magnet weight in the manual and comparing it to the eminence site, they're Big Bens

okay that totally makes sense.  i think i do have to take apart the cabinet to see the ohm rating and see if there is any way that i can make this a 16 ohm cabinet without buying new speakers.  i'm keeping my fingers crossed that they're 16 ohm speakers

How would that help? If they're 16 ohm drivers, you can wire them in parallel for 8 ohms, or in series for 32 ohms, but not for 16 ohms.

I pulled mine, and replaced them with JBL 2220's. Basically the same sound, but the JBL's have another octave of response on the high end. But I want more bass, so I'm going to replace the 2220's with K140's.

Hey Issac, do your 2220's have smooth or ribbed cones? I have a pair that have ribs and I think they are re-cones. Not a big deal, they look like my K140's, just wondering. I replaced the SPL speakers in mine with JBL's and boy, did the volume go up, much more effecient and so louder with the 60 watts my 200S puts out. Guess if I had a Colliseum or something that powerful, the SPL's might have been safer....but I have found nothing that sounds like a JBL....and I rather like that sound. And that is why we use Sunn's...the sound.
