Sunn 2x15 cabinets for Guitar?
« on: December 20, 2007, 02:20:03 pm »
I have a Sunn 2x15B cabinet . Is there anyone using 2X15 Cabs. for guitar instead of Bass? I understand that Townshend Used the 2x15 cabinets early on in his career, and that they were loaded with JBL d140's.
I certainly do not need JBL's, as they are more of a clean tone and wont break up ( plus they are also a sheetload of money).I'm looking for a tweed bassman style sound, which my S100 head, withn the countour cranked is ready willing and able to achieve, but it does need the proper speakers with lower power and early breakup I think.I would just run the S-100 through my Marshall Vintage blackback cabinet, but I want ALL that Sunn mojo.
I would like to set my Sunn S100 head atop my 2x15B, but I wanna lose the 147Magna 15's inside.
I was thinking that a pair of fender P15N's would sound awesome with the S100 in that cabinet. What say ye?

15"s for guitar were pretty common, back in the day, although those who used JBLs almost always used D130F drivers, not D140s. Eminence, CTS and Jensen drivers were also common. You'll have to try them to find out for sure if they'll work for you.

I've used 15's for guitar for a long time. I am currently using a 2000s through it's matching 2x15 and a Carvin x100b through a Showman 2x15 cab. 15's are really heavy on the low end, but you can get some nice sparkle and country twang if you need it. They are alot more beefy than 12's and that's what I love about them.

i have a 70's model Traynor 212 cab that actually sounds pretty good for bass through my 200s.  it has a smooth-er sound than my 410 cab.  not as fat as my 215.  doesn't do slap well, but jazz sound pretty good.

i was playing 4 15's (a 67 and a fender reissue) and the sound i could get was pretty unique.  but i'm selling the one 215 to buy a 610 to get a different tone in there.  the high end was near non existant though, only downfall.

Aside from using those Rotosound strings, anyone have any idea what Chris Squire used for speakers? He was the first one I heard eho had lots of treble. Before that, we all went for the 15"s for the gut punching lows.
