What Cab do I have?
« on: March 10, 2008, 02:05:18 pm »
I purchased 2 single 15 cabs that are 29"h x 24"w x 111/2" D.
They have a single round port, Sunn corners, a unfaded rectangle on the grill cloth the size of a Sunn tag. They came with D-140s but with the 11 1/2 depth I don't think they are original. These cabs are the size of Sunn Studio PA Cabinets except they do not have LE100s, crossovers, or stand mounts.
Any Idea what they are??

Hi there, sounds like they might be Sonaro 1x15" cabs.,it's the single round port that makes me think that.I'll check the meas. of mine and let you know, good luck Mel.

I have two of them as well. Mine came with the stock sunn/eminence 60 WRMS speaker of the day, but I'm sure the upgraded versions were available with JBL D-140's. I've reloaded mine with a JBL D-140 in one cabinet and a 300 WRMS Eminence in another. I use them with a sunn concert bass head. When using only one cab I use the Eminence (I've blown the JBL before, but they sound great right before they blow), and I stack with the JBL on top. The two speakers do sound "different", and the blend is quite good though it would be hard to say which one is "better". If you ever decide to off your rig, let me know. Great overall cabinet design. Useful for practice, gigs and recording.

Thanks for the info. Could you guys verify that your cabs are 11 1/2" deep? I thought the bass cabs were typically 15" deep and some of the early guitar cabs were 11 1/2". The Spectrum & Sentura Series 1-15 & 2-15 cabs were 11 1/2" but other than the Studio PA cabs it seems everything else is 15" deep. I am convinced that what I have are original Sunn cabs of some sort though.

Mine are 11.5" deep. Both, unfortunately, are missing the identification plates usually found on the back of the cabinet (four small nail holes and a rectangular mark where the plates use to be are all that remains). Therefore it is still a mystery as to the actual model number. I don't beleive they ported the Sonic or Spectrum cabinets which makes me think these would be bass cabinets since they are ported. Thie may have been an early version of the 115P model that appeared in late 70's early 80's catalog.

Hi there,my Sonaro 1x15" has the same dim. as my Solarus 2x12" cab.,I think it's a manufacturing thing, all they have to do is make a different baffle board and either put a full back or the two "backboards" on and they can make 2 different cabs. and use the same cab. frame, good luck,Mel.

Yes, they were good at getting maximum mileage out of a box. Saves a bunch of time and therefore money in production.
