Sunn 412SP Speaker Cab

Hey I found a Sunn 4x12 SP Speaker Cab for sale.  I was told that it is 8ohm and 159w RMS.  Does this seem right?  I thought most cabs handled around 300w.  Would this cab be super quiet or still loud?  Any help is greatly appreciated!

159 seems like an odd number, and misleadingly precise. Really, it depends on how old it is. Sunn 412S cabs from the mid seventies probably handled around 150 watts. At that level, they could handle any amp Sunn made at the time. True, the Coliseum series could put out 300 watts, but only at 2 ohms. One 8 ohm 4x12 could easily handle all it could dish out into that impedance. Even a 4 ohm cabinet would be unlikely to be blown, and two of them would make it almost impossible.

There is no "usually" when talking about speakers. Each speaker handles X watts. Multiply those by the number of speakers...and that is your cabinet rating. As you can see, there is almost no way to come up with 159 watts when speaking of 4 speakers.

I suggest you find an ohm meter and check the cabinet for DCR ohms. That at least gives you an indicatin of it's impedance. You can also open it up, take pictures, post them here and someone will most likely be able to answer your question.

'Course if the speakers are recones....or mis-matched....as I said, there is no "usually" here.

well...the asshole selling them to me sold them to someone else last night out of nowhere.
