blown rectifier tube on 100s
« on: March 18, 2009, 10:21:20 pm »
While in use my 100s stopped making sound, then some smoke was seen coming from the amp. I quickly turned the power off. A few days later I turned on the amp to see if anything was visibly wrong with it, and determined from looking at the schematic that the rectifier tube (GZ34 I believe) was most definitely blown, and powered the amp off again quickly.

Can I simply replace the tube? Could the fact that the tube blew be indicative of larger problems with the amp?

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

I'd say seeing smoke coming from the amp is a sign that more is wrong than just  a tube.

Hi there, the rect.tube could have gone because it's old and weak,or it could have gone because of a shorted cap or some other part. The tube probably had a heater open up on it,not short because your fuse hasn't blown, but you should check your fuse to make sure it's the right size.If everything pans out ok,then yes you can replace the tube, but since you've seen smoke,I'd look over everything.Good luck,Mel.
