The '72 catalog says its 150 watts RMS, 350 watts peak.
They suggest a myriad of speaker combinations;
One or two 6X10 cabinets, Sunn Transducer (CTS?) drivers.
One or two 3X12 cabinets, Sunn Transducer (CTS?) drivers.
One or two 4X10 cabinets, Sunn Transducer (CTS?) drivers

i don't understand this one or two cabinet suggestion
wouldn't two 6x10's or two 3x12's or any combination of these really
be to much of an ohm load on these heads

Good point, it would take some fancy wiring. The 312 is the difficult one, unless they used 16 ohm 12's or specially wound VC's, with a single cab cab you would either have 24 ohms or 2.67 ohms, OR have one of the drivers getting 4 times the juice of the other two. If you did use 16 ohm drivers, the best you could safely do would be a total impedance of 10.67 with a pair of them.
Who's got one?

the other is on a 6x10l

i've never tried to run both cabs on one head because i don't want to damage anything

Is your 312 stock? If so, what is it loaded with?

Hey everyone, thanks for all of your help in this. I just picked up a Line6 4x12 cab and it sounds AMAZING. So now that I have it all together, I want to know just a couple more things since I'm not very knowledgeable about amp heads. First of all, the distortion knob on channel 1 doesn't do anything. Is that because I need to have a footswitch to operate it? Or is something wrong with the head? It's not a really big deal I guess, I could always get a distortion pedal. Second, There is a little crackle when I turn the volume knob, and fiddling with the treble knob causes the output to go in and out. Is there a way to fix that myself, or do I need to take it somewhere? And lastly, I was thinking of covering the outside cover w/ blue vinyl to match my guitar. Is that possible? It feels like either really dense wood or maybe metal. Again, thanks to everyone who posted so far.

there are 4 RCA connectors on the back of your amp.  this is for foot switches to turn on/off boost, distortion and reverb.  reverb defaults on so no switch is needed, boost and distortion defaults off.  to turn either on (I don't use the boost, it's kinda nasty.  distortion is great) take one (as in single) RCA cord, expose the 2 wires(hot and ground), twist together and insert into the jack (on mine it's the L distortion RCA jack).  turn up and enjoy.

also it should be noted
that when you engage the distortion
you will not have any control over the volume on that channel at all

at least that's how both of mine react

it will just be balls to the wall
and you'll need to adjust volume on the guitar to turn down if needed

honestly
if i were you i'd just get a big muff to run into it
and call it a day

i'd say something is wrong with your amp.  my volume controls work fine.

I have decided for ease of use, I will just use an aftermarket distortion pedal. But does anyone know what I can do about the crackle I get when I adjust the knobs?

Can I clean the pots myself? O will I have to take it somewhere for that?

i got one of these. 150 watts into 4 ohms. any cab or cabs combo will work with this as long as you don't go lower than a 4 ohm total load. one 4 ohm cab or two 8 ohm cabs for best results. you can use a single 8 or 16 ohm cab or two 16 ohm cabs with no problems, just the higher the ohms the less power the amp will put out. NEVER GO BELOW 4 OHMS WITH THIS MODEL

cleaning pots is not hard, contact cleaner and let them soak.  but I'd take it to someone.  it's really not that expensive.  I'm a carpenter, I like working on my truck but it's not financially prudent for me to waste a day working on something that would take an hour at a shop because they have the right tools.  your choice.  if you want to learn, that's a different story.  do a search on it.  I know it's been talked about in detail before.
