200 S Update

You may recall my questions on the 1970 200s head blowing a fuze. A friend with radio-tv experience looked at it. We pulled the chassis and noticed the head had fallen on the power corner and the repair was a little sloppy. We straightened that mess out and pulled the tubes as suggested. Powered up and didn't blow the fuze, added the tubes and all was good except for a blown 12AX7. Jim noticed the power cap felt hot so I ordered a J&J replacement cap from Eurotubes. We finally got around to installing that along with a Raytheon 12AX7 that tested the best of my spares and it also needed a 6AN8 which I procurred. To make a long story short-IT LIVES and sounds AWSOME with my 68' EB2C!! Thanks to all for the encouragement. I have some internal before and after pics if anyone's interested. Forrest

What J&J cap did you use?

Their 20-20-20-40-500v. We had to enlarge the mounting hole in the chassis to prevent grounding. Other than that,everything was easy.

Did he happen to check the voltages that are going through that cap? I just did the same thing to mine but ended up using 600v individual caps as the voltage was well over 500, I am sure it was at least 540, maybe even 560 on the B+ with 120v AC at the plug.

No, he worked from the schematics, and we went with what Euro Tubes recommended.

Thats why I recommend individual caps, but if you go with series connected 350v caps, you get a 700v rating, and it ends up being cheaper than the Sprague 600v caps. Do a search and the info is there from a couple years ago.

There are 600v caps available that are not Sprague, and not pricey either.
