Question re: speaker branding
« on: September 14, 2009, 01:19:35 pm »
I have a Sunn Beta 202 cabinet that I was given a few years ago.  I'm trying to figure out if the speakers might be original or replacements.  They have absolutely nothing on the back of the speaker (bare metal).  The series and parallel jacks are also missing from the cabinet (along with the front name plate) leading me to believe the speakers may have been swapped out.  Are all Sunn speakers branded on the back?  Thanks.

I'm not familiar with the cab, but almost all speakers have at least a number on the rim coding the manufacturer and date.  My Sunn speaker experience has been with a couple of 18cabs that had Cerwin Vegas and a 421L with Sunn sticker on the magnet.   :-D

The Sunn part numbers for speakers are of the form 81-xxxx-yy-zz. Xxxx identifys the basic specs of the speaker, size and power rating.  Yy may not be stamped on the speaker, sometimes it's 00, sometimes it's the impedance 04, 16 etc. Zz may not be stamped on the speaker, it's usually 90 on most speakers. I don't know what that means. If you see a number like 67-aaaa, that's a Eminence made speaker, aaaa is a date code. 137-aaaa is a CTS made speaker with date code.

The only code stamped on the speaker is 0126 08 19 (5 or S) and a separate 3831

Any ideas?
