GRILL CLOTH: Wendell Fabrics FS7005 or FS8024 ?
« on: May 21, 2010, 06:18:29 am »
Apologies for yet another grille cloth thread,  but I can't find the thread that discussed this before.
I'm restoring a pair of  215 Cabs.
One is a Sorado cab that someone modified and then butchered the interior duct work to make Peavey Black Widow speakers fit.  I've re-done the duct work to make it into a "200S" cab complete with JBL D140F speakers.
The other is a 215B cab with the port down the side (I forget what kind of speakers, but they aren't JBL's or Sunn. They're replacements).
Dimensionally and appearance wise they are a perfect match except for the grill cloth (and the chrome corner covers, but that's hardly noticeable).
The "200S" cab has the "old" grille cloth with the small diamond pattern on the diagonal  and the 215B  has the "newer" grill cloth with the mostly silver/black rectangles.
My plan is to clean the original grill cloths and keep them for posterity,  but make new frames and cover them with either  Wendell Fabrics FS7005  or  FS8024 so they match when I drag this rig somewhere to play in front of an audience..
In a thread from a month or two back the difference in these two fabrics was discussed, but I can't find the right thread.  I seem to recall that the FS7005 is slightly duller and therefore more of the appearance of  "vintage/used" grill cloth while the  FS8024  is brighter and has the appearance of "Brand New" grill cloth.  Do I have that right?
Also,  in order to change the grill cloth on my 2000S amp head,  is it neccesary to remove the chasis in order to access the grill cloth covered panel ? ( I'm hoping to not have to change cloth on the amp head.  I'm going to wait to see what it looks like with the new speaker grills and then decide if I need to).
Just looking for opinions on which way to go  FS7005  or  FS8024 ?

FS7005 is the "brand new" looking one.
I suppose you could remove the front panel without removing the chassis on a 2000S, but I think you'll find it much easier to work with an empty box.
I'm not around a 2000S presently, but if memory serves me it would be extremely difficult to get around the transformers to get to the screws holding the front panel in place.

I think I posted this in the last grill cloth thread, but here's another picture of one of my 2000S rigs redone in SF7005.

I have a sample of FS8024, and it looks very good and is maybe a little closer, but doesn't match my "40 yrs of smoky clubs" grill cloth on my unrestored gear either. I may order some for another Sunn project.

EDIT: It is in fact FN-5660-21, not FS8024 that I am referring to above. I got my numbers confused.

ED,
The cloth on my  2000S is really in very good condition, very clean.
I am loath to change it at all really.  I know it's a relative/personal preference type of thing, but how much of a mismatch is the old post 69  cloth on the 2000S  to the FS7005 ?  I know that in the end I'll just have to wait and see & decide for myself,  but....

It's not identical, I think it's probably very close to what the cloth looked loke when it was new. It's hard to tell how different when you are comparing to a 40 yr old piece of fabric.

I purchased the FN-5660-21 cloth form Wendell Fabrics after comparing some samples that they sent me against the original cloth in my 412s cabinets.  The FS7005 will give you the brand new look where as the FN-5660-21 will give you a vintage aged look.  Just depends upon the look you're going for.  If you want to find the old thread just search on "Wendell".

Well,  I ordered  FS7005 from Wendell Saturday.  I thought the new look would be best for the "replacement"  grille cloth since I'm going to clean up and save the original grill cloth and frames.

Thanks for the help, guys.

I'll be ready to put up some before and after photos of the whole restoration project hopefully in a week or two (I'm not fast.  It's only taken me about three years to get this done so far,  Ha Ha).
